Default Manually opening trunk

Hello out there. I am new to Jaguar and have a great need for some advise.

I have a 1999 XK8 and foolishly allowed the battery to die on me. I only have one key, the black one. I was advised by the local dealer to insert the key into the small hole on the rear of the car. When I insert the key, it will not turn right or left. It goes in, leaving about 1/4" showing. I did not purchase the car locally, however I was allowed to talk with a dealer mechanic who advised that I try pushing on the trunk a bit, however that did not help. I also tried spraying some some lubrication into the hole and that also did not help.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Gary

Will it unlock the doors? Welcome to the forum, you'll find plenty of help in the car specific forum folders. If it unlocks the door it may need to be lubbed or your not inserting it all the way. Either way if you can get the hood open on the left side of the engine compartment there is a provision for an external battery source. I don't recommend jump starting the car from there but you can apply 12 volts to unlock the trunk.

If you have the owners manual, provided it's not locked in the trunk, it does give a very good outline for this procedure.

Welcome to the forum,

Good to have you with us.
Excellent advice above.

If you haven't already done so you should add your car details to your signature to help others to help you.

Gary,

+1 to ooootis advice.

For the procedure, go to the XK8 FAQ's using this link:

https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/x...ts-data-29800/

Scroll down to the pic by Paul Pavlik showing where to connect leads in the engine compartment to charge the battery.

Good luck.

Dear ooootis, thanks for your advise. I have downloaded an owners manual and other publications, however I cannot find the information on applying 12 volts to unlock the trunk. Can you please point me in the right direction. Much thanks.

OK, I think I have it. I should be able to connect a 12volt, quick start battery charger to match the picture and that should be enough to allow activating the interior button to open the trunk. Am I correct? Thank you. I am a bit of a novice at this.

Gary,

Yes - that's the way.

Don't attempt to start the vehicle with this type of connection - just use it to give you power to open the trunk.

That's interesting in the last 6 months TOPIx has drop the XK owners manual from the drop down list. When I was looking for info on the XK I thought for certain that it was there. Maybe not? Gray matter is starting to lose it color LOL

Update: I just took a look @ the XK FAQ's page. Man ya'll have done a bang up job. Alot more info added since I looked 6 months ago. Gary I hope you did look @ that page they even have a pic of where the connection are under the hood.

Thank you very much. I got the trunk open with the first attempt and apparently did no harm to my car. I hope that I can return the favor in the future.

Gary,
I do like a happy ending.
Now you've got into it, this seems like a good time to get the luggage compartment keyway sorted.
