Hi All,
I joined up some time ago and have not taken the time to introduce myself.
I live in Toowoomba Qld Australia and am a retired former mechanic, civil earthworks operator, truck driver and general bs artist and only excel at one. Currently in the process of breathing new life into a pretty sound 1976 XJS. Had hoped it would be done by my birthday this (2018) year but will definitely achieve that goal in 2019. I have been a lifelong car and motor bike tragic, with tastes that too often exceeded my income, but as time passes find that the objects I lusted after in my youth are now affordable, and oddly enough, show remarkable signs of neglect, wear and tear in common with myself. The major difference being that the objects can be returned to their former glory.
I would like to express my gratitude to all the people who populate this forum and take the time to so willingly share their knowledge, experience and expertise with us all. After all, no one person has all knowledge and even someone who knows just one thing may have the knowledge the rest of us need.

Welcome to the forums Glen, thank you for the intro. I added you to the Qld Roll Call yesterday when I came across your post there.

Yes, I thought that as well. Interesting car, only 83k showing believed to be genuine but previous (second) owner found that it was getting a bit hot on a drive and picking up a bit of coolant in the oil. So he had it pulled down to find electrolysis damage where the liners seat in the block, promptly lost heart and put it up for sale. When I got there the dismantled engine was stored in open prawn tubs across the road from the beach and had been for some time. Ouch!
Located a really good (1980) engine in what was left of a parts car in Adelaide and towed it home and am not far off enjoying it.

As a side note, the car was advertised as a 1978 model and was fitted as expected with a GM TH400 transmission and it was only when looking for a paint code to tidy up the engine bay that I realised that it was 1976 manufacture complete with a BW chassis suffix. Really odd because the dead engine was numbers matching and GM pattern not BW. They were not supposed to have the TH400 till 1978 and I have run the numbers through the UK XJS registry and it comes up as 1976 manufacture and Australian delivery and should by rights be a BW transmission. I have a friend down toward the big smoke who also has a 1976 Australian delivered XJS numbers matching that also has an OEM TH400 trans. He was told it was a factory prototype so maybe they tested a few early cars with the transmissions in a known harsh environment, who knows?
