I have had the privilege of extended test driving / inspecting / diagnosing a friend's 2001 XKR Convertible that hasn't been driven much over the past few years. It is in (mostly) very good shape with only 67k miles.

So far I had a couple of inspections done (for comparison and education), looked at error codes and work needed, had to replace the battery, hard reset the ECM, and I'm now debugging a Restricted Performance error when using the J-Gate shifter on the manual side. I found a TSB ECM update for the shifter, but I don't know the details of the update yet and whether it addresses my problem. If the ECM update isn't it, I may need more help on the J-Gate manual operation not being consistent with sometimes springing back to Drive if I don't hold it in 4th, or sometimes staying in 4th when I let go of the shifter. I see both behaviors, and I believe the Restricted Performance occurs when it stays in 4th unassisted. I did some searching of the forum for J-Gate problems, but I have not found mine described yet.

I have used this forum extensively in my research and debug of the XKR over the past month. I love this forum so much that I decided to join it even while I'm still in the last phase of the extended test drive! I plan to purchase the vehicle once the J-Gate Restricted Performance is fixed. Only caveat is if it turns out to be really expensive to fix, then we need to renegotiate, otherwise, I'm ready to purchase once it's fixed.

I'm loving the 2001 XKR CNV, and can't wait till it's officially mine! This forum has made the entire process informative and a lot of fun! I also can't wait to get to some of the mods I've found on the forum! For now, one mile (and one part) at a time.

Remember to add vehicle details to your Signature to help others to give relevant advice. Go to the User CP button on the left of the top menu bar, then Settings & Options under Your Control Panel. Select Edit Signature and enter the details.
