Default New owner and new member, 02 XJ8

Hi all,

My wife and I just picked up a beautiful 2-owner 2002 XJ8 in british racing green with 101k miles from Florida. We hope to get many enjoyable weekend drives and anticipate driving 5,000 miles annually but have already added 1,000 bringing it home to our garage and with initial joy rides. It was more affordable than we expected so long as no major issues come up. I'm putting on a set of tires and taking it in for a trans drain and filter change this weekend as prevention. The car was traded-in and went to auction where all the service records were tossed out but I was fortunately able to track down the longtime owner who assured me that it was properly maintained which was evident by it's condition but always good to hear nonetheless. We do have an engine oil leak that we need to trace down so fingers crossed. Looking forward to participating in the forum with you all.

Ryan

Hello, Ryan,
Congratulations on your new Jaguar on at least 2 counts.
1) that you got it in the first place and
2) that you got the records in spite of the dealership sending it off to auction. This is the usual thing with cars that old taken on trade I have learned. Dealerships normally don't want Anything on the lot over about 3 years old and move them along quickly.
Good job rescuing this one.

Welcome to the forums from ElinorB.

Thanks for all the welcome messages, looking forward to seeing you all in the threads. I'm a 10-year forum member for my subarus and it's nice to find another tribe. I've only spied one other xj308 in my neck of the woods as well as an x350 Vanden Plas. Will be posting about the source of this oil leak soon, it's gotten worse with 2 weeks of driving and I'm afraid its the rear main seal.

The regular oil leak on the V8 is from the rear of the plastic cam covers which then runs down the had and block. Seriously bad luck if it is a rear main seal.

Default Oil leak source

Thankfully it's just the oil pan gasket leaking and oil is blowing back onto the bell housing. Some very minor cam cover leaking but per my mechanic "these don't count as oil leaks for a jaguar" ha! I had the chance to look at the car on the lift while in the shop for trans fluid and filter changed and we were both impressed with how clean and solid things looked. Fortunately no metal in the trans pan, too.

Just as well it's a minor leak. The front suspension has to come off to remove the oil pan. No gasket - Jaguar use Hylomar sealant.

Mine was cracked so I had no choice but to replace it.
