I just bought a 2003 XKR with 75,000 miles in November, and I have been overjoyed by this forum. Unfortunately, my "big cat" started misbehaving once I got her home. I have always worked on my own cars, and own a 2006 Jeep LJ, and a 1976 MGB, so I'm no stranger to grease and wrenches, but I hoped I would get to drive my new girl for a bit before I need to start wrenching on her. So far I've had to replace the plugs, then the coil packs started going out, so I had to replace those (4 of which I had to replace in a parking lot somewhere in Tennessee - luckily I had pre-purchased them and had them in the trunk along with a small ratchet and socket set). Then the Mass air flow sensor threw a code... luckily by going through your forum, I was able to clean that and reinstall. I have also purchased a valve cover gasket set which I plan on replacing this weekend to hopefully get rid of the wonderful oil smell every time I come to a stop - and also keep the oil out of the spark plug tubes. Now the Air intake tube is crumbling on the bottom like a sugar cookie, so I have ordered a Mina Gallery Performance air intake as a replacement. I did replace the main serpentine belt, but was unable to get the supercharger belt off because there is no clearance, so if anyone has any suggestions or tricks for that, please let me know. All that being said, I really love the car, and am looking forward to many pleasurable hours driving her around (if my wife doesn't kill me first because of all the repairs). I have been looking for about a year for an XKR, and was glad when I found this one - and I knew given the age of the car that I would have to do some wrenching, but I absolutely enjoy driving it; especially with the top down. I just wanted to introduce myself and say hi, and that I am so glad I have found this forum to help me bring my big cat back to health!
It sounds like you've already found your way to the XK8/XKR forum so there's no need for a link to it from me. The 'HOW TO' thread at the top is a good place to start for information on regular issues. Hello,
Congratulations on your new Jaguar convertible! What a Beauty!
Ya know why all those things waited for you go get on the road before failing, don't you? The car Sensed that you would be a good care-giver.
People laugh at this thought but it's TRUE!
She held it together as long as she could possibly do so, hoping to get to a good home in time, until she simply couldn't anymore and collapsed in Tennessee (she Knew you had parts in the trunk!). But now, safe in your garage, she has Relaxed, knowing she's in good hands.
I know whereof I speak.
When you've dealt with all the Criminal Neglect and Deferred Maintenance she has suffered, she'll be so grateful she'll give you a couple Hundred Thousand miles of trouble free pleasure.
