Welcome to the forum Smokeywater,

Good to have you with us at Jaguar forums.

I'd eliminate a failing battery first before making any expensive assumptions about a possible transmission fault.

Follow this link https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/xk8-xkr-x100-17/ to the XK8/XKR forum for help, advice and information.
The 'HOW TO' thread at the top is a good place to start for information on regular issues.

Please remember to add vehicle details to your Signature to help others to give relevant advice. Go to the User CP button on the left of the top menu bar, then Settings & Options under Your Control Panel. Select Edit Signature and enter the details.

You can also visit the UK & Eire Region forum by following this link https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/uk-eire-68/
to find other members in your region.

Enjoy the forums.

Welcome.

I agree with Graham, and would add a simple trans fluid drop and refill with new fluid as a 1st step.

Good luck.

Thanks for the replies
I had a new battery at end of last year
I also had gearbox fluid replaced and new gearbox filter
in january this year
the gearbox works faultlessly in normal driving circumstances
this morning i drove from north Yorkshire to surrey
in light traffic some 230 miles without a single warning light or problem
it only displays the problem when crawling along in heavy traffic so gets hotter than usual
could it be a blocked gearbox cooler
its always the same problem
after about 20mins of conjested traffic the abs and asc light comes on saying not available then it shows gearbox fault and goes to engine failsafe mode
the gearbox changes gear normaly and smoothly no clonks or bangs or delays in selecting tramsmission from stationary
nothing at all until it gets hit in traffic ???

First I would get an OBD scanner that you can plug in and read real time info while driving. I don't think your problems are in the gear box. In the slower traffic you have a higher build up of heat in the engine bay.
I think the heat increase is causing the alternator to quit producing the required output and as a result you are beginning to drain the battery and once the voltage reaches a certain level the modules begin to throw out warnings.
The battery at rest needs to be 12.5 to 13 volts, with the engine running and accessories operating the battery voltage should be running 13.5 to 14.5 volts. Once the level drops to 11.5 volts the engine will run fine but the modules start getting the wrong input and throw up warnings. Once the voltage reaches around 10 to 10.5 the ECM will shut down and the engine quit. The shutdown is to preserve the electronics.
With all that said I suspect that the regulator element in the alternator is failing due to the heat.

Thanks for your reply
im assuming if there is a problem with the alternator it is not enough to cause the alternator warning light to come on
as there is no evidence of this
also its worth mentioning that once i stop and turn of the engine for a couple of minutes then restart it is all fine again even though the car is still hot
as long as im able to drive without being stuck in a traffic jam it dies not repeat the fault
i will get the alternator tested as you suggest as its a relatively cheap fix
it definitley seems like a heat related issue for sure
