Default X TYPE 2004 2.0 diesel ( non start, ignition fail with knock sound )

Hi all

New to this site and forums in general, so go easy on me. I own a X type 2004 2.0 diesel, im under no illusions in regards to the worth or popularity of the model but shes my pride and joy.

Ran with no issues for around 12 months no obvious deteriorating noises or movements. Began to have random cutouts whilst driving mechanics and electrics would turn off, dash lights would come back on but no ignition, engine failed to turn over. 1st time
this happened coming off slip road of motor way. After 10 mins engine started and i got home. Garage could not find an issue, happened again this time it died completely. Ignition lights came on again but every time key turned a loud single or
double knock would happen and ignition would fail. RAC came out and could not diagnose the fault.

She has been bedded up in the garage for about 4 months so due to the current climate i have some spare time to investigate myself. Im professionally trained and certified (15 years ago) so not a complete idiot. However my knowledge is outdated and i haven't continued in the trade so i really would appreciate any advice, common knowledge on the X type or ideas anyone may have to get me on my way.

thanks
Matt

Welcome to the forums Matt,

The "sudden death" symptom suggests it could possibly be battery earth terminal. Many reports of these multi strand leads gradually breaking up at the chassis connection terminal end and giving all kinds of weird electric faults. Next I'd be getting a scantool on the car and looking for codes that may help.

Follow this link https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/x-type-x400-14/ to the X-Type forum for help, advice and information. The 'HOW TO' thread at the top is a good place to start for information on regular issues. You can also use the UK & Eire Region forum by following this link https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/uk-eire-68/ to find other members in your region.

I've added vehicle details to your Signature to help others to give relevant advice. If you want to change these, go to the User CP button on the left of the top menu bar, then Settings & Options under Your Control Panel. Select Edit Signature and enter the details.

Good luck and enjoy the forums.

Graham

The ones circled in RED are the usual suspects:
