2000 Jaguar S-Type stuck in park on incline
Hello,
So I did some searching around the forums and found that the problem is that the manufacturer uses a cheap plastic pin in the transmission. I went ahead and ordered the aftermarket repair kit found at this link to avoid my mechanic overcharging me for parts. http://www.ebay.com/itm/280928451070?ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p398 4.m1439.l2649[/URL]
$47.00 and free shipping was the best deal I could find.
This is not the first time my car has been stuck on an incline. The first time, I tried to use brute force on the shifter to get the car out of park, but obviously this resulted in some hefty fees. This time I know better than to pull on the shifter.
So I have two questions. Is there any way to override the park lock without tearing up the center console? Will this new metal pin prevent the problem from reoccurring?
Thanks for your feedback.

Push the car up against the incline and have someone pull the shifter out of park. Or, jack up the rear.
The easiest prevention is to get in the habit of applying the parking brake before putting the car into park.

My car is now in driving condition. Thanks for your feedback. We had four people push and it finally worked. Other than my parking practices, is there any mechanical prevention that I can do to make this less likely to happen? Obviously this isn't common in other vehicles, so I'm wondering what part of the transmission in S-Types is not up to par. Like I said above, I already ordered the shifter "upgrade" pin.

As plums said, apply the parking brake with the car in neutral and allow the car to rest against the parking brake before putting the car in park. Then, you will never have to worry about this problem again

The handbrake should be used ANYTIME the car is parked.
I would caution against relying on a thin piece of steel inside the gearbox to keep the car from rolling away when not attended. (I know that alot of people do)
Jaguar even went to the 'trouble' of incorporating the EPB that engages automatically on the 2003MY>.
The problem is the Ford 5R55N gearbox parking pawl design.
Jaguar addressed this issue in TSB S307-16. (please read)
I don't know if the 'kits' are still available from Jaguar.

Even on flat ground? :/ This can be sort of annoying when in a hurry. Maybe that's just me. I just feel like the problem is much deeper than that. This time that I did get stuck, I applied the parking break. Maybe the order is the issue. Should I go parking break while holding foot break, release foot break, depress foot break, put in park? That was my interpretation of letting the car rest on the parking break before putting it in park. Thank you for your feedback.

Yep, I always use it. I put the car in neutral with my foot on the brake, apply the parking brake, take my foot off the brake to make sure the car is resting on the parking brake, then put the car in park. It only take a coupe seconds, much less annoying than getting the car stuck in park

I found out that my e-brake won't even hold my car on an incline. I guess I need it adjusted. Would this problem lie in my brake pads or will I need a cable tightened? I realize you may not know about this problem, so the question is open to all. Thanks!
e-brake? e=electronic? as in epb? your car doesn't have that if it's the one you posted (2000 Jaguar S-Type 4.0)
If you mean the usual parking brake for a 4.0 then yes it needs fixing!

Um... I do know by the way.... but we will leave it open for others to chime in and assist....
By e-brake, I meant emergency brake. Is that not the proper term? Whoops lol.
I didn't mean it like that! I don't doubt your knowledge at all. I just included that question in my reply to you and wanted it to be clear that the question was open to everyone. If you do know and would like to share, please feel free. Sorry for the misunderstanding!
Yeh but no.
