Default 2000 S Type Flashing Lights and Alarm Issues

I have a 2000 S Type 4.0. Recently, the car was sitting in the driveway and the horn started beeping and lights flashing. I turned it off with the key fob, at least I thought. Later, the headlights were flashing and I stopped with the fob again. Then, went to move the car and the battery was dead. Since then, I’ve been doing quite a bit of reading about the Passive Anti-Theft System possibly being an issue. Also been trying to track if there was some sort of drain. I charge the battery, start the car then shortly later, the red LED on the dash flashes, the head lights flash and we eventually are back to a dead battery. I hoped it was maybe a bad battery so I got a new one today. Hooked it up and the car didn’t turn over, played around a bit then it would crank but not start. Eventually it started but the, I went to shut off the car and turned the key to off and the engine didn’t stop. Weird! Got it to turn off by putting the key back in and playing around. Again, the LED on the dash started to blink again. Now, I’ve disconnected the battery again until I get another plan.

Can anyone help? This is weird. We don’t have a Jag dealer anywhere near us (100 miles or so). The car has very few miles 60k or so and in otherwise awesome shape. However, this issue is making the car an expensive paperweight. Help!

First things first, charge that new battery. I'd suggest an automatic charger with at least a 10 amp output. A trickle charger won't cut it. A new battery may be only partially charged, so don't fall into that trap. You need a fully charged battery as a baseline for any troubleshooting.

After the battery is fully charged (note how I keep repeating that...), please tell us what code the little red light is flashing. More details in post #60 of this long, heartbreaking thread:

Thank you for the suggestions. I’ll be getting a charger today since I only have a trickle type. Also, I was able to download the electrical system training manual which may prove to be valuable.

Ill report back back later after trying to full charge the new battery and get any codes from the LED light.

Stay tuned!

Battery should have a minimum of 12.6 volts across the terminals when charged. If not, battery may be faulty.

The symptoms described are typical of a failing or weak battery.
