2003 4.2 transmission fluid drain/now no start
Recently been doing some work on this 03' S-Type I bought for my daughter. Replaced leaking radiator, front hubs and numerous other fixes. Car has 92K miles and have been running and shifting beautifully, except for when warming up it would surge a little in and out of 5th and 6th gear. This would be accompanied by a sort of "woosh" sound. When warm, the car would perform and shift just fine. Anyway, I thought I would add a couple of tubes of Lubeguard Shudderfix to the trans, to see if it would help at all. Jacked the car up level, and drained 1 litre of ATF out. Trans was warm but not hot at the time, as the car had last been used 2 hours before. Replaced this with the same amount of fluid--1 litre of Pentosin ATF mixed with the 2 small tubes of Shudderfix. Well, the car won't crank now and is telling me gearbox fault, restricted performance and cruise not available. I've read and cleared the codes, and had the battery disconnected overnight to no avail. Any suggestions on how I can get it started much appreciated. Thanks!! P.S Codes pulled were P0506 and P1643

Curiously, the starter cranking speed is not a good indicator of battery condition on these cars. The various onboard computers will act up due to low voltage well before the battery is run down enough to affect the starter speed.
Also, look at the bezel at the base of the shifter. Is P or N illuminated? If not, the starter operation will be inhibited.

No P or N illuminated. Few hours charge show the battery to be in good health (it looks like it was replaced just before I bought the car). I don't know a lot about modern Jaguars, but I'd say the transmission is sensing either slightly low or incompatible fluid and shutting things down.
Check the 2 8mm hex-head bolts on the trans side that hold the shift cable are present and not loose.
P / N should light. When thy don't it's commonly the shift cable is loose so the trans and PCM disagree on what gear is selected - with very bad outcomes.

Concentrate on the P and N not illuminating. That means the poor computer doesn't know what gear has been selected. If Park or Neutral cannot be verified, your starter will not be commanded to run.
As JagV8 has suggested, check the bolts where the shift cable attaches to the side of the transmission.
Does the Park interlock work? If working properly, you have to depress the brake pedal before moving the shift lever from P. If the shift lever is stuck in P, even if stepping on the brake, that's a problem. Not entirely sure on 2003+ models, but I think a common fuse powers the P/N indication and the P interlock.

Had the car towed to a local independent Jaguar garage--turns out I must have dislodged or damaged a wire under there that in turn was shorting out the fusebox..Collecting the car today.
Glad to hear you got it resolved...always something huh...when i replaced my radiator i disturbed the transmission cooler lines and they started leaking....the price of being a diy guy i guess
That's true, always something! I also recently replaced the radiator, and now I have a coolant leak from under the expansion tank. It's not the tank, but that crappy connection with the spring clip. Really poor design there!
