2004 S-Type 4.2 - Parts from other years/models?

Default 2004 S-Type 4.2 - Parts from other years/models?

Hello.....I'm new to the Jaquar Forums. My father picked up a 2004 Jaguar S-type (4.2L) for me from an auction site as a way of thanking me for helping him through his battle with esophageal cancer. In 2019 ....while quite weak from chemo and radiation treatments.....unknowingly to me...my father drove 200 miles each way to pick it up. The whole thing was a total surprise. My father was quite proud of this find. However, looks were deceiving. The car was pretty neglected over the years. I'm not a mechanic by any means and funds are very limited....but have slowly been working through each issue. I've had the car for a little over three years and have only been able to drive it maybe 20 times for quick little joy rides before something else went wrong with it. Many times, I wanted to just throw in the towel and send the car off to its final resting place. But knowing what my father went through to surprise me with it, my heart just wouldn't let me do it. Sadly, my father lost his battle with cancer in September, 2022. But something keeps pushing me to try to get the car up and running reliably as a way of honoring him. Perhaps its the don't give up attitude my father had up until he passed at 90 years old. So for very sentimental reasons, I want to give it one last try. My hope is to get the parts I need from a salvage yard. I've called every salvage yard I can think of within a 75 mile radius.....and none of them have a 2004 Jaguar S-Type to pick from.

Can anyone tell me if the parts that I need have to come from that exact model/year? Or would a different year or maybe even an x-type be helpful? The parts that I need for now are the two vacuum hoses shown in the attached picture and a retainer clip for the hose that attaches to the bottom of the coolant reservoir tank.

An X-type will not work, as the V-8 was never fitted to this chassis. An XJ-8 with the 4.2 should use the same hoses. Firment for the brake booster hose indicates both the XJ and S-type. The part is available from Barratt's for around $48.00 new.

Sorry to learn of the loss of your father.

It appears some of the cooling system is disassembled, so let's start with getting some of the known failure points corrected so the vehicle can become more reliable. The water outlet containing the thermostat is one of the items to be replaced as it often cracks leaking coolant. Also the EGR return hose under the inlet manifold should be replaced as it can cause severe overheating when it fails. Remember to refill the cooling system with the correct coolant meeting Jaguar specifications.

Use a smart phone with the Torque app to check for any stored DTCs and list them here as a starting point to getting the vehicle sorted.

Yes start with the basics. Get the JTIS (Jaguar Technical Information Services) this is Jaguar speak for the shop manual.
Next get a working copy of the JEPC (Jaguar Electronic Parts Catalog) This is Jaguar speak for the parts catalog. This is exactly the same as what the dealers use. You use this to see exploded parts diagrams and part numbers but it contains no information about doing any repairs.

The great thing is both of these are free on the forum and some searches will find them. Now this is old software and the JEPC in particular is a bit difficult to get working since Flash is dead from Adobe. A great forum member has given us "jpart" software this allows us to continue to use the old JEPC without the flash player.

NBCat gave you a link above to the JTIS for your car.
Once you have the JEPC you can find the hoses your looking for. Might as well bite the bullet now and get both installed and working. Then learn how to use them becaue these two documents are really key to any DIY repair you face!

I’ve had excellent results finding a Jaguar part number, and then running a web search with that. Look on eBay with a Jaguar part number, as many dealers are liquidating older stock. I’ve found many genuine Jaguar parts this way.

What is the purpose of those hoses? Are they part of the crankcase ventilation system? I had several similar plastic lines fail on my ‘02 V6. I fabricated replacements with steel lines and rubber hose. They work great. You might be able to save yourself lots of money that way.

Thank you all for the feedback. I've downloaded the JTIS and the JEPC and the "JPART" tool from Steve the Fixer. I poked around a little on all. It all looks to be very helpful as I embark on this next chapter. I am currently running the JPART Indexing for all so it is going to be a while before I can play around some more with these tools.

While I am waiting on that.....So is it only the XJ-8 that has the same same 4.2L engine as my 2004 S-type? If there are other models please let me know. Also......can you advise on the year range for the S-Type and XJ-8 that would have the 4.2L? When I called the Salvage yards......they really weren't helpful with regards to what other models and/or years would have compatible engine parts. I would tell them I am looking for parts for a 2004 S-type 4.2L and they would say they don't have that model/year in their yard. I would ask if they had any other models/years that might have the vacuum hoses and/or reservoir tank clip and they didn't know.

year for year stype and x350 are basically the same car

Yes as Xalty says pretty much all 4.2L V-8's are the same. Jaguar is so small that they use a very limited range of engines and transmissions across the entire JLR product range. So Range Rover and Land Rover 4.2L are in the mix too.

The 4.2L was developed off the older 4.0L V-8. Many variations used over the years.
Probably one of or possibly even the best engine Jaguar has produced.

4.2L Engine History

While used might work I would consider that these are all plastic parts and the car is a 2004. So at minimum you have plastic that is 18+ years old. It's at the end of it's life and they are shot. Now since they are plastic IF you can't source factory replacements you could rig up something up using an aftermarket hose of some kind.

We are seeing this type of repair on older car fuel pump repairs. The plastic elbows that connect the hoses to the pump are easily broken and almost impossible to find new. The repair replaces the plastic elbow with some common brass fittings and then replace the hose with something that fits.

Thanx xalty and clubairth1...that is really good to know about the 4.2L. And thanx for the link. I also really appreciate the advice about the plastic parts being at end of life and rigging something up. It's gonna take me a minute to act on all of this great advice.....but at least I now have a good direction and options to start with.
