Default Brembo calipers - problem solved!!!

I finally went out from the problem of the Brembo Calipers
The problem in these caliper was the alloy of the pistons
Aluminum pistons were not right
My tech made new special steel pistons and finally the problem is solved
I changed the oil from Super DOT 4 to 5.1 and the brakes now are acting superb
I have to test different pads now and in short time I will start the production of a pair of 2 pieces brake rotors (floating aluminum hat with steel rotor)
I'm very happy of this

I don't understand this - my experience is that the Brembos are superb. What do you allege is (was) wrong with them? For some reason, a lot of people think that Brembo make excellent brakes, as I recall. Are you saying they and Brembo are all wrong but you're right? If so, why?

No, Brembo makes a lot of products and different range of products
Sometimes they are using cheap materials on particular series (OEM)
The Brembo brakes on Jag and AMG are not top of the range
Brembo caliper made for Porsche are different in many things than the one we find on AMG and Jag
A good brake isn't only made by dimension number of pots and aspect
Brakes on S type R suffer of this problem, big brakes, but not the right product
On very high temperature they suffer on dimensional stabilty of the alu pots against the caliper alu (poor alu for the pots, not suitable for heavy use)
AMG suffers of the same problem, we faced this problem many times
With this change the car is "raceable"
Next will be the suspension

i agree jagv8. Question i have a 01 s type 3.0 and im upgrading the brakes, rotors & i want to do my calipers and i want to know will the calipers thats on the s type-R bolt up to mine because i like the brembo calipers better

If the wheel hub is the same probably they will fit
The Brembo on Jag are not radial mounting calipers (like Porsche and other hi-tec Brembo calipers)
If the wheel hub for 3.0 and R type are the same, probably they will fit

If you want to upgrade brakes on your jag I suggest to buy Porsche calipers and build on your own the mounting link (Porsche are radial)

Regarding the rotors (R type rotors are taken from a little van they are standard production on OEM Brembo range) we suggest to use floating rotors
The actual rotors are so heavy and they do not act properly with a 4 pot caliper due to the NOT floating feature

In the States a very good production is made by Stoptech (they use the same source of Brembo for the rotors, and build by their own a very good alu hat)
We sourced from them a lot of BMW and NISSAN race kit for DTM and races
Perfect products

The right dimension should be 355mm X 32mm vented
Not drilled, but slotted

Regarding the pads, we usually use PAGID or FERODO or other special pads
On this particular R we are using OEM pads
We started the mod of this car short time ago so we upgrade one piece a time in order to see how it acts
It's quite expansive due to the fact that we throw away a lot of new parts but the final result it's perfect
For example this time we bought a full new set of rotors and pads, we use them, we face the problem and then upgraded the caliper pistons to steel
Now we are starting with rotors, and we will throw away the actually front rotors (brand new) after few miles and the pads too

Hey Croc.
Can you give us some insight as to what you do. Race team, tuner etc.
I never heard you mention problems with your brakes just your suspension.
Is this your daily driver and or a weekend racer?
Can you post pictures of the before and after modifications?
Are you building race cars that are Jags or some other make?What about engine mods?
Lots of questions, we know that after market bolt on stuff for Jags are hard to find.

Hey Croc,

Good to know that there is a big difference between the porsche OEM brembos vs the jag OEM brembos. Were the changes you made mostly to address a high temperature high-speed braking performance issue? My STR is used as daily commuter and my biggest grip with the brembo is the low speed grab and overall modulation feel is really lacking compared to the porsche. Does the steel pistons improve the feel for normal driving? Is the petal feel close to that of the porsche with the changes?

Do you or your tech have any plans of seling metal pistions?

The modulation improves a lot, but I think that is mostly the difference between a used caliper and a renewed caliper (with new pads and discs)

I am not happy about modulation at all, I think I will have to make more exp on different pads
OEM are right, but not what I'm used to

I think that floating rotors will improve a lot the pedal feedback
I will keep you informed

You have to always think that roads in Swiss and Italy are quite different from what you are used in the States

The same regarding the traffic

very beautiful setup
I like 4 pots more than 6 and 410 is too much in dimension, but it's only my way of thinking, many tuners think different
The 410 rotational mass is too heavy
It's seems that rotors are not floating, could you post the rear of the disks
6 pots, 410 not floating has not a big sense
The bolts used on hats MUST be special hardware, usually is one of the most expansive items in rotor/hat build up
You could not make a custom hat and use std hardware to fix the disk to the hat

Too bad you did not get stainless steel brake lines. Hard to believe you spent multi-thousand dollars on brakes and left the rubber hoses???? Your pedal will feel much more solid with the correct lines. I guess this is NOT a STR?? The STR has SS brake lines stock. You really need to engineer the ENTIRE brake system and not worry about looks so much.

The brake lines are custom stainless that are wrapped in a heavy rubber heat shrink, I had the hoses made by Truechoice Motorsports in their workshop & they recomended this. I like the fact if they ever chafed I would see it right away.

Are the disc rotors floating?
From the hardware it seems you machined working the hat not considering the different dimensional stability of alu and iron
The best way to get a working hat is to buy from an affordable supplier (Brembo Stoptech Coleman AP Racing ecc ecc) a rotor and a hat in the dimension you need (un-machined) and then machine working the pieces to your needs
this is the way we custom build the brakes for our race cars.

nice setup, youre just missing the full race look without the safty wired hat bolts.
