Default check engine light removal

Is there a way to remove check engine light without a obd tool. I have had codes read which told me all 3 cylinders on the passenger side were misfiring.. I have changed the coils and spark plugs.. but still have the light.. ok want to reset and see if it comes back.

You can get a reader which can reset codes for ~$20. It is a good investment, especially since you have already paid out way more for new coils....

Some codes are removable by disconnecting the battery for some time (usually 30+ minutes to drain all keep alive memory). Some codes are hard codes and will require a scan tool. You could always call around or swing by a local shop and see if one of them is generous enough to turn the light of for you for no charge since it shouldn't take more than a couple of minutes.

If the fault is fixed the MIL will self-clear after 3 engine warm ups.

If fault not fixed, it'll stay on.

When you get the codes read for free at the parts place. Have the guy clear everything before he unhooks the reader.

Some places won't do that as its against the law in some states. Of course, one could always ask the employee to just borrow the scan tool or there's always the "Hey, look over there!" and then clear the codes.

It's funny you say that because I had a parts store guy tell me that once. I can't find anywhere that it's against any law to erase the codes?

Maybe there is but I can't find it. I finally figured out the guy simply did not know how to do it. I showed him on the reader and then it was no problem.

For troubleshooting it seems almost a must to be able to clear everything and start over.

You need to fix the fault. That's what the code's been saying and will go on saying. Meanwhile you're causing poor mpg and gradual damage to cat conv

You need to look it up for your specific car type (see below). It's in JTIS - free download.

P1646 - Oxygen Sensor - Bank 1 Sensor 1 (heater circuit fault) replace the sensor after checking the connector and wiring harness not being burnt by the exhaust.

Looking online for replacement oxygen sensor.. I see one listed" upstream" and one is "downstream" which one would I be replacing?
Thanks

If it's not too much to ask.. can you take a quick picture of its location.

Hi, if it wasn't the dead of winter here I would be more than happy to provide a pic - but it's chilly outside. The O2 sensor you need to change is the one that comes right off the exhaust manifold.down pipe going to the converter.

This is what you need (if you have a pre 2002 car):

Amazon.com: Denso 234-4046 Oxygen Sensor: Automotive Amazon.com: Denso 234-4046 Oxygen Sensor: Automotive

But I see now that you don't. Sorry.
