Default Codes P1586 & P0306

I have been having issues with my 2001 Jag S type 4.0 jerking while driving and I have found out that it is misfiring. on the highway sometimes the check engine light would start flashing but would never stay on. The code said cylinder 6 is misfiring. I filled the car up with gas and now the check engine light is on constant and not flashing. Same code for Cylinder 6 misfire though.

The guy at the shop said because you have to take off the intake it is a big job and it will be about $300-$400 labor. The dealer wants $950 just for a tune up period.

Should I have whoever does the job change ALL the coils while in there or just the bad one?

Flashing means cat conv damaging.

I'd just change the one coil and anyone competent can do it.

But... while the intake is off, do other tasks if appropriate so what year car, engine size, how many miles?

Intake off? The guy must have thought it is a 3.0.
On a 4.0 it is a simple DIY job.
Changing all the coils would be a good idea especially if you are around 100 K miles now.

I only have 77k miles on it...but if I can do it myself I would easily change the coils...is there a video or diagram somewhere? when I look at the photos I dont see how I can get to them easily...

Pretty easy. Just pull the plastic cover off the top, the air intake, and then the plastic covers off the valve covers and they are right there.

I just seen a video where the guy didn't have to even remove the intake for the left side...but on the right side there seems like there is a lot in the way...

Nope. Just what you actually need to make the job as easy as possible (depends how cables etc are routed).

No. I'd change the air filter if not done for say 20K miles. But just fix what's wrong is all that matters. If the non-SC V8 is like the SC then very easy to swap one coil.

kinda frustrated...just found out that the reason cylinder 6 is misfiring is because the valve cover gasket is bad and oil is getting into it. Ive already replaced the coil pack.

is the valve cover gasket a big job? how long do I have before that new coil goes bad?

Well how much mechanic work have you done? I don't consider it too bad. Just be sure and change both sides as they age the same.

found out there are 2 separate sides...obviously I want to change the side that the missfire is on but should I just change the other one too?

If not much oil is weeping out I suppose you could instead carefully remove it often enough that it causes no damage. Cheaper but a hassle.
