Default Dextron III?

Hello all,

Is Dextron III suitable for my Jaguar s-type (5r55n box)?

Thanks.

ESSO 999 is the Jaguar recommended fluid. I would guess that MERCON fluid for the Ford would be the same. Ford Explorers used a similar gearbox. I don't know what is available in your part of the world.

Hi Leonard,

Do a search on here for 55R55N transmission and you will get loads of info.

I believe you would want Mercon V for the Ford transmission.

Regards,

Seth

Leonard,

I recently had my 55R5N Trans rebuilt and Mercon V was used.

Hope this helps.

Thanks,

Yes, MERCON V is part of the casting next to fill hole, however i sourced a bulk quantity of Dextron III.

What was wrong with your transmission? - I just replaced my prestroke 4-3 which was smashed in 4 pieces - but the "judder" problem still exists in low gears.

My transmission was not shifting right from 1st to 2nd and couldn't shift up any further. (Mind you these issues never gave me a transmission fault message) If I recall there were issues with the solenoid pack and there was a ring shaft that was shattered inside the transmission case. There were shavings all over the case, which essentially crapped out my trans.

I wouldn't use Mercon III in your transmission.

OK, well we get ATF produced by Comma which complies with both Dextron III and Mercon V...it's a 12 year old tranbox now but might consider adding a friction lubricant.

Could I ask how much your replacement shaft cost? I did consider the solenoid as a possible failure - the theory being that my broken prestroke spring damaged A,B, OR C.

I'm getting all gears now but when hot, and pulling off the car judders as though the clutch is not meshing properly. Baffled.
