Default help with sound in engine

ok, I know you are going to cringe when you hear it, but it sounds a lot worse in this video. I get kind of sick when I hear it. Anyway, it runs great on the highway or going up the street. With no codes being thrown. the tack stays precise and no real engine shake. I am thinking several things with the noise but hoping someone might be able to hear it and recognize it. My steering just recently was giving me some issues with a noise just when the wheel is turning but that could be a different issue. More of a humming noise with that one. The car has 120 thousand and now it is my toy that I do want to keep running but not the end of the world.

Thanks

Cringe I did.

Sounds horribly like a timing chain, or associated item, whish is not common on the V6.

Might be a VVT chamber having issues, which they do when too thick an oil is used. I run 5W/30 Synthetic in both mine.

Then as it settles to normal idle, sounds more like a cracked exhaust mainfold, or even a gasket in that area blowing?.

I am running Mobil 1 5 w 30

I thought the timing chain also but the noise seems to not be coming from that direction. I am leaning toward the cracked Exhaust manifold. Is their a way to check that out? Although I sometimes started to smell exhaust, you know how when a car is in front of you that is leaking exhaust real bad and it comes in through the vents, but in this case, there is no car in front. Thank you.

I hear a combination of 3 sounds.

Tappets/buckets clicking on the camshafts.
I do hear what sounds like one of your exhaust ports leaking.
A sound like a bearing is going bad on an alternator, or power-steering pump. (a bad alternator bearing sound can travel back into the engine since the alternators are hard mounted to the block)

When you gently increase and decrease the engine RPM, how do the sounds change?

Thanks very much for the reply. I mentioned some humming up front especially when turning and took a look at fluid levels and my power steering was very low. Went under the car and found some dripping. So now need to figure out where the leak is.

When driving the car, do not hear the noises you hear on the video. I wish I could tell you a change in sound when an increase or decrease in power, but really do not hear one. The car sounds for the most part, normal. If a bad bearing on the power steering pump would it cause the leak? I did record the video I think when the fluid level was down on the steering. At 120 thousand, expected some things to break down so here we go.

This picture is taken looking down at the engine. I point out the dip stick position. I saw fluid around that connection piece that is in focus so it must be spraying a lot of places.

OK, here goes my experiences so far with our S Types.

The power steer fluid in my 2000 model is different to the later car. Mine had ATF in it when purchased in Nov 2013, and now I have syringed and refilled 4+ times with Penrite PAS, which is the spec called for in that car. The annoying loud whirring when cold is gone, teh steer "feel" is what I expected but never had, and the "weeping" in a few areas in GONE.

Her S Type, late 2001 runs Synthtic ATF, and has never had noises etc ever.

Her car started weird noises, NOT like yours, but the serpentine belt was waaaaay past its replacement date/time/kms, so a new Gates belt, SILENT.

Just saying.

Thanks, my guess is the belt has not been replaced on mine so probably give that a go. What do you think about the leaking? I have not been putting in anything special as far as the fluid, basically using Prestone power steering fluid. any thoughts on what might be loose or need replacing.

I use JTIS but find Mitchell on demand goes into a little more detail on what to look for and how to repair.

I would note the leaks/weeps. Wash it down.

Refresh the fluid a few times.

Renote the leaks/weeps.

Often some fresh fluid does wonders, the rest of the time NOTHING. If yours becomes the latter, dig deeper if it really bothers you and is a major concern.

Replace that belt. It is called for at 100K kms down here.

Once that is all complete, re-evaluate the noise/s.
