New owner of a basket case 2000 4.0 with 51k miles
I came across this car while perusing my local salvage car auction. Although it's in rough shape and had mice living inside of it at one time, I was able to put a battery into it, top off the cooling system and drive it about 60 miles at highway speeds with only minor issues.
Idle was rough but after fresh fuel and some highway driving it smoothed out and seemed to drive flawlessly. Then, the check engine light began flashing about 5 miles from home. The engine didn't stumble at all or sound any differently but I'm going to see if any codes were stored since the light didn't stay on.
I had the chance to do a preliminary wash and plan on doing a tune up, filters, and new coils this weekend for preventative maintenance. I'm really hoping that there isn't an oil leak causing the spark to short out. The head liner, clear on the roof and hood are failing so I want to address that once I know for sure if the engine is good.
Questions:
I come from a BMW background and the 5 and 7 series have all kind of cool and rare add-on options like coolers in the rear center console and other executive upgrades.
What are some sweet optional upgrades that I can do to this car?
I have a 2004 S-Type 3.0 that's a parts car and it's got a perfect black interior, even though it's the updated interior. Any documented full interior updates from a newer car on a 1.0? Is this feasible? What should I pull off the 2004 to upgrade the 2000?
When I had my 2001 X200 4.0 I kept a few on-plug ignition coils with me in the car as spares.
I replaced DOZENS when I worked at the dealer. The 4.0 coils were always changing part numbers and getting 'superseded' at a blinding pace from Jaguar.

The light flashes to warn of a misfire bad enough to cause thermal damage to the cats. Don’t continue driving like that. Most likely you will find one or more misfire codes have been stored.
Don’t panic about oil collecting in the spark plug wells. The preferred fix is to replace the gaskets for the valve covers, of course. But since you’ve got other issues also requiring attention, you can usually just clean the wells and spray the coils with some electronic cleaner. Unless the oil leak is a gusher, that will usually buy you a few months.
Next URGENT job is check - and probably change - the chain tensioners. You almost for sure have the brittle plastic ones and if (when) they let the chain go your engine is toast. You need the metal-bodied ones & associated pats - use Search and read up.
Lots of parts changed in 2002.5MY so don't expect to use many parts from cars after that.
You can look up all the part numbers from your two cars using their VIN numbers on the official on-line jaguar parts catalogue.
This is a good way to see if the parts are the same.
