oh no.. torque converter
That is the downside of the transmission being a sealed unit. Can't inspect the fluid without dropping the pan. And seldom will a transmission shop replace the torque converter alone. They try to get you a total rebuild.

I assume the vehicle made it back home? Scanned for codes?
Checking on the fluid:
You can, carefully, with the passenger's side of the vehicle on jack stands or a ramp, slowly, slowly, carefully, using a hex tool, slightly, slightly open the metal fill port on the passenger-side of the transmission (on the body of the transmission, above the plastic pan). Once a little bit of fluid streams out, capture it in a clear container, and quickly tighten that fill hole. That's how I discovered my S-Type's need for new transmission fluid soon after buying it. Not the smartest way, I know, but if someone knows an easier way that doesn't risk losing a lot more fluid than you intend...
It may not be the torque converter going. It could be a symptom of low transmission fluid, bad solenoid, slipping transmission...
I wouldn't drive it until I had a reasonable clue as to what is going on.

The cat is completely immobile on its own. I can put it in D, R, 2,3,4,5.. and get out of the car. It doesn't move. The drive shaft isn't spinning and I can here the load change when I move out of park.
Yep. That's the first thing to check. Two 8mm bolts that tend to back off and drop out over time. They should be snugged up with an 8mm box wrench every time you're underneath the car for an oil & filter change, etc. Takes about 30 seconds to locate and tighten them. You must use an 8mm box wrench because there is not enough working room to get a socket wrench on those bolts....
