Default Oil Filter, time to update.

I had been using a WIX filter and then switched to the Napa Gold which is made by WIX. But after two bad experiences with those leaking at the base gasket because they mysteriously became a bit loose I decided to go back to WIX. So yesterday I picked up one locally and I'm very disappointed. It's made in Germany, the housing looks cheaply made where it meets the ring (kinks in the metal forming) and ... the silicone internal gasket is gone ... This how they used to look.

The Tbird and Lincoln LS filters are identical and lord knows Motorcraft filters are priced right. The ones for my Sable wagon also had the silicone internal seal.

OK so it looks like my local parts store slipped me an old stock item. In the box the filter is marked 551228 instead of 51228. That's an old part number that's supposed to be equivalent but ... It goes back this morning.

I've been a fan of pure-o-later and in my town I could only find one! Doing a search I saw this post which has me second guessing on what might be best for the next change -> https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/tags/pl15317/

I've been running PurolatorONE filters on all of my vehicles for years, with no complaints:

Purolator: Filter Lookup

In the search results, it's the blue one. For my '02 V6, I use PL20195. For your '05 V8, it's PL15317.

STP 5618 replaces the Wix 51228. Lasts up to 5000 miles according to the box. Other filters that fit are Fram 5618, Motorcraft FL2008, Microguard MGL51228,Carquest 84302, and Purolator L15317.

WIX has had a good reputation for years, Purolator no. STP I have no idea.
That said ... I now have 4 filters in front of me.

Wix 551228 German version. This looks to be the best but I beleive it's NLA. Has a nice wide seal. It's the heaviest of the bunch.
Wix 51228 with a narrow oil seal ring now but no ridges.
ECOGUARD S5317 looks well made but it's much shorter. I don't like that.
The NAPA Gold which has given me all the problems with it's micro ridges on the seal.

I want to see the Motorcraft but it isn't carried in WalMart so I need to get it via shipping. Those were always good filters for my Sable wagon and available at Walmart. I guess they didn't make enough S-Type V8s, Lincoln LS V8s or Tbirds either?
