Default Poor man's TCM reset -vs- TCM flash

I own a 2008 3.0 S-type with THE LURCH. It's not HORRIBLE but annoying. I've eliminated HALF of it by adapting my driving. But it still remains, and it always feels like I'm working up to one of those catastrophic gearbox failures I've read so much about on this forum. I made an attempt to fix it by purchasing a ZF brand pan/filter and 8 quarts of ZF ATF and had a flush service performed by my mechanic. It seems to be better, yet it also still there. Did I read somewhere here that disconnecting the battery overnight serves as a TCM clear and reset? My battery was flat after sitting for a couple of weeks. Did that count as a TCM reset? I'm unclear about the difference between the battery disconnect TCM reset and an official TCM FLASH service. BTW I called my local Jag dealer a month ago after the ATF flush and requested a TCM FLASH service and he replied "we don't do that on those OLD cars anymore"

Any thoughts, clarifications or ideas.

Be happy and be well. Go take your cat for a sprint, every few days so the battery won't run down.

No, only way to clear TCM adaptions is via Jaguar software.

Did you swap out the mechatronic seal and replace w/ newer version with black o rings?

Could be leaking on the pins controlling the TCM causing issues... fyi.

If not check it. If the area is wet you will need to drain the fluid, drop the pan to swap it out.

+1

Battery off does nothing at all for the TCM.

It does clear the fuel trims and OBD monitors, things you typically do not want to do - e.g. the monitors may not set again but you need them set for such as smog tests and proper functioning of the car.

You can use OBD to check the status of the OBD monitors and also the fuel trims and I would. Do NOT do code clears!

Note: reflashing is not the same as just clearing the TCM adaptations. The latter is quick, simple, and what you may perhaps want. Dealers may well not want to reflash but you probably don't want that anyway.

When you attempt to CLEAR ADAPTATIONS you might get an onscreen prompt advising that the software in the ECM and/or TCM is older than the latest software version in the IDS/SDD.

The IDS/SDD will need to update the ECM and/or TCM and when the TCM is updated, the adaptations will automatically be cleared.

If the ECM/TCM software is up to date, the adaptations are cleared in a short session.

Although Jag say it's a "lifetime" sealed trans, we all know that's not the case.

I was having the knocking issues from 1st to 2nd that was very annoying. If you have that issue, It is the bridge seal that needs to be replaced. The mechantronic sleeve and rubber sleeves should also be replaced as they're rubber and wear out over time. After I did all this, I was still having some lurching from 4th to 5th If I recall. I was a bit low on trans fluid, added more and now the trans is not having any issues. It's been over 2 months now and is working well.

My STR had about 137k miles when I did this service if I recall. I was able to find all the parts on ebay for about $20.

Best of luck.

They don't say that and schedules for changing its oil have been on their tech site for AT LEAST 10 YEARS!
