I've been searching for a solution in the threads here but can't find one. I no longer have power to the socket in the center console. It used to work for charging my cellphone, but quit. I checked the fuse and it's good. The cigarette lighter socket works, but in using it for the cell phone, probably bent the tabs in there and now the lighter wont stay in. I think I can fix that, but still would like to know if I can easily remove the socket in the console compartment to check it out. Looks like there is a plastic kind of retainer under the top edge of the socket. Does it pull out? It has tabs on it, but I think they are for a missing cap.

 

Pull the console. You may have a broken wire. Should be easy to see once you get the console up.

Thanks! Now that procedure doesn't look so easy! I did read somewhere that the fuse location in the owners manual of some years is not correct. Maybe I checked the wrong fuse. Don't know if I want to go to all that trouble for just the socket. I don't smoke in the car anyway, and I can still use the socket in the ash tray. Think I'll do a little more research and see if I checked the right one first!


Or, maybe I could access the socket from the rear by pulling the air vent.

 

I have the same problem with my 2005 S-Type so I'm interested in any solutions. The console box comes out with just 2 torx screws but I found no loose or burnt wires or blown fuses.
I suspect my owners manual may not be correct for fuse identification as some of the diagrams don't match my car - no year on manual and I'm the 3rd owner. Does anyone have the correct fuse listing for a 2005 model?

 

What else is supposed to be on the same fuse? Are they working?

 

My manual says the fuse should be F32 which is shared between cigar lighter and power point sockets. The cigar lighter works for my cell phone but would like to have option of enclosing cell phone and charger plug out of the way in the console.

Well, in my case, the charger works in the lighter socket, and used to work in the console socket. I tried a 12V spotlight in the console socket. Nothing. It too worked in the lighter, so there must not be any power. Besides, the charger lights up when plugged in and it don't in the console.


Sure wish these fuses would indicate that they were blown by just looking at them, like the old glass ones. You just have to look at the fuse box and the burnt out one stands out!


According to the owner's manual...
F2 Cigar lighter & power point relay
F32 Accessory relay & socket
F56 Cigar lighter
F58 Power point


So, the lighter works so it couldn't be F2 or F56. Is the socket in the console F32? Is the socket in the console the power point? If so, it must be F58.


I'm confused and frustrated!

Instead of looking under the socket for a broken wire (I thought that is highly unlikely), I looked into the socket. Lo and behold I found the problem...

This plastic piece was sitting perfectly in the bottom. Even the hole in it let me see the contact point, so I thought all was OK in there. That missing cap allowed it to fall in there. Guess I need one!

 

I fully understand why this had you fooled. That black plastic washer looks like it belongs inside the socket and would probably fool anyone who hasn't looked in there for a long time. Very nice detective work in finally figuring it out....

 

Wherever did it come from?

 

It's the end piece off a plug-in charger.

 

Yeah, I used to have a different charger which quit working, I thought. Thanks for that info Mikey. I was wondering where it came from too! Thought it was another plastic Jaguar piece!

 

Fixed! It turns out my owner's manual was not MY correct and listed F56 & F58 as unused. The F58 was indeed blown. Wouldn't you know, my favorite charger went out after replacing the fuse but I confirmed power point socket operation with another one.

Thanks to AirCommando for bringing up this topic and Jon89 for assistance with MY '05 correct fuse designations. Ordered the correct manual off eBay today.
