Exclamation quick question about auto box

hi all

Just a quick question regarding the auto box on the 4.0 v8.

Basically i have an issue, whereby when i park on a steep hill, i put the hand brake on, then engage 'Park' on the box and switch off the engine. Now when i come back to the car, if i take off the handbrake BEFORE disengaging park, the car just gets stuck in park and the gear shifter will not move. The only way i can get it out of park is to have someone either push the car forward or (like yesterday) ask someone if they could tow be forward gentle just to release the pressure on the box and let me disengage park.

Its almost like the rear transmission locks, when the car rolls back slightly....anyone else experienced this problem or know what might be causing it?

thanks in advance

I have read here somewhere here about the Ford 5R55N transmission and that issue.

I cannot find what I am looking for, so here goes memory, haha.

On the gear lever is a plastic connector that slides up and down the gear lever, and the 'LOAD" when pulling out of "P" is sometimes huge, and this plastic slide thingy jams, and worse case if breaks, and you got no gear selection at all.

Mine is OK, so I have not ventured in there, YET, but my understanding (someone correct me if I am wrong) is that the "difficulty" is more to do with this slide arrangement actually jamming on the gear lever, more than the trans itself.

I have seen a remodelled "plastic thingy" on ?bay, and it is made of alloy, and claims it will not break or jam.

thanks Grant (nice pic btw)

Sounds like it could be the issue to me, as the lever will move, must there is a lot of pressure on the it and i don't want to force it in case i break something. Once the strain is removed from the box it engages freely again.

Have you got a link to the upgraded part?

anyone else agree that this could be the cause?

thanks again

Why not take out of Park before taking off the handbrake?

Try that link. My IT is crappy at best, so I hope it works.

If not, just search on the ?bay using Jaguar S Type as the heading.

It is from Deutche Parts in USA, so maybe simple enough to source.

No idea.

Most things like this are simple enough, just a matter of systematic investigation as versus rip it to bits and panic.

As I said I have not been in that area on our S Type, but on the X300 and others in the fleet, there is NO rocket science inside the console area.

great stuff..cheers for that...i'll do a bit of research and see what's involved.

Until then i'll just have to remember not to put in park when on a steep hill.

I'm used to manual stick shifts!

Just be careful? If you upgrade that plastic part and you get too rough with the shifter what's the next expensive part that will break?

I still think Jaguar made that part to fail so you don't cause more damage. Just use the brakes and know that the 5 speed transmission has a tendency to lock in park if parked on a hill.

It's very well-known and I have not found a fix for it so I think you just need to live with it.

just going to live with it....might see if it still locks when facing downhill, instead of uphill....either way i'll just bank the handbrake on and select neutral to be on the safe side...cheers all
