Default Random Misfires

2002 Jaguar S-Type 4.0

I have replaced all 8 coils and spark plugs. Cleaned out the air intake, checked for vacuum leaks. No leaks were found. Using the CanOBD2 to read engine codes, I get P0303 code on cylinder #3. I clear the code, drive the car and recheck only to get a P0303 on #2. Cleared the codes again, drove the car and received a "Random Misfires" code.

Any thoughts?

Your help is greatly appreciated.

More information:

The car does not misfire at idle or holding highway speeds.

Something I'm not understanding about your issue. P0303 describes a misfire on Cylinder #3. What do you mean by a P0303 on #2?

Can you tell me what cylinder you went to for #3? and #2?

I might be able to help you if I can fully understand the issue.

Best.

My mistake about P0303 on #2. I gave the wrong code for #2. The problem is that the engine only misfires on acceleration but gives a different cylinder each time. I am in the process of moving the #3 coil to #1 and number one to #3, to see if #3 still misses.

On the 4.0 engine I have the cylinder order as:

Passenger side, front of car to back of engine as 1234
Drivers side, front to back of engine 5678

Is this correct?

Jaguar used both A1, A2, . . . B1, B2 . . . and the more standard 1357 /2468 through the years.

Here is the cylinder numbering chart from JTIS for the 4.0:

Yes, you're correct for your MY. You have misfires on the two inner cylinders on the A bank. Check the ignition control module. There are two. One controls the inner two cylinders on one bank, outer two on the other. The second control module the rest.

Ok, After moving coil from misfiring #3 to #1, now the error code has moved to #1. I am assuming I have a new bad coil?

After returning the new coil on #1 and replacing with another new coil the problem was solved. No more misfires. Great power has returned.

I guess the one must always remember, that even though you bought a new part it doesn't necessarily mean the new part is good.

Thanks for your help!

Firstly, please write clearly so you can be understood.

If I understand you correctly, you found oil fouling the spark plugs and coil units on Bank2. In that case, you must replace the cam cover gasket and spark plug boss seals, then clean the coil units and see if they are still serviceable.

If the MIL is on, what code(s) are stored in the system? DTCs are alpha-numeric with five places, so P03008 is not a correct code. Is the DTC P0300 or P0308? Replacing oxygen sensors is not going to correct a misfire.

Do not operate the vehicle under conditions that cause the MIL to flash as catalyst damage is occurring.

Check the wiring loom to the fuel injectors and check the fuel pressure at the Schrader valve. Post the fuel pressure readings here.

Also, what is the age and condition of the battery? A failing or weak battery that has 12.2 volts, or less, with the ignition in the off position must be replaced as it can cause many of the electrical faults posted on this forum.

Your big question is have you changed the timing chains and tensioners on your 4.0L?

You are on borrowed time if they have not been changed.
