Rear Caliper Piston Retraction
Hi Everyone, I'm new to forums and have inherited a 2003 S Type V8 Jaguar. The brakes need replacing. So I purchased new EBC pads and disks. I've replaced many disks and drums in my short 52 years. I've never had to deal with EPB systems before so that's new. The difficulty I'm having is with retracting the caliper piston. I purchased a tool which turns the piston but does not push the piston at the same time. So this begs the question do I need to get a different tool, like the one shown on the JTIS manual? I've read you can rent one from Auto Zone. Is that the solution? Any help is greatly appreciated.
I presume you've got one of those cube-shaped tools with different pins of each side. Most need to be modified slightly to fit the piston groove on the car. You'll have to push inwards and turn at the same time which is kind of awkward but doable. Some owners report that opening the fluid bleeder makes it easier to push.
Ok, all went well last night and the rear brakes and rotors are now replaced. Thanks to all for the assistance. The left rear caliper was so far out that it just did not want to go back in. I went cheap and made a tool similar to the JTIS one, out of a 3/8" bolt a used brake pad and the $10 tool from Napa. Worked like a charm. The right side took no longer than 15 mins from wheel off to back on. Tonight I tackle the fronts.
I serviced the brakes, front and rear on my 2004 S-type today. For anybody with access to it,the Mazda rear brake retractor tool works great.(I have had for years for my Mazdas).Picture attached
