Default Restricted Performance message displayed

Hello my fellow Jaguar Enthusiasts,

He is my issue. About 3 weeks ago I gotthe Performance restricted message on my 2005 S-Type Supercharge. The last time I started the car prior to thatwas about a week with no issues. The displayed message went away after about 15 minutes of driving. I like to mention that the car was drivingfine, so I continued to use my Jag pretty much daily for the next 2 weeks (with NO issues OR error messages).

So after those 2 weeks, I have not started the car for about 5 days. Today Istarted it for the first time in 5 days and I got the Restricted Performance display again in addition to a check engine light (again the car was driving fine). After going to a few stores anddriving it around for 15-20 min both the message and the light went away. The message disappeared first and about 5-10 after the light disappeared. BTW: thelight I’m referring to is amber and looks like a faucet.

So I have 2 questions:

1) Now that the error displays are gone can I still have the Codes read a AutoZone, or do the errors need to be displayed?

2) Can it be from not starting the car for a few days. Keep in mind the car has 123k miles but runs perfect. But I’m getting concerned with the error message.

Any input would be helpful.

Thanks,

John

Classic signs of failing or flattish battery.

My guess - the S/C coolant aux motor is intermittent and probably about to fail. However, if the S/C is working normally even when the Restricted Performance light is on, JagV8 is more likely to be right.

Codes are kept for tens of engine starts so any stored are worth reading but you won't really know how old they are. Your own cheap OBD tool (like elm327) with "live data" will save you much pain sooner or later.

Given the problem has occurred twice after the car not being used for a period my first thought would be the battery.

3rd vote for a battery. I keep my cars on battery tenders if they're not being used for more than a week or two.

I had the same problem with my 05 STR. My issue was a small vacuum leak. I'll need to ask my brother where specifically but he just popped the hood open played with something and it immediately went away. Nonetheless, let us know if you change the battery and it fixes the issue. GL

Another vote for failing battery... The battery charger conditioner is a great idea... My 3.0 V6 displayed similar symptoms and after much stuffing around and testing, the problem was a faulty MAF. Don't however get into the habit of replacing parts on a whim, battery, MAF included. This can become very expensive. Proper fault finding is a must.

Can you let me know what your brother said he played with. My STR has a small vacuum leak too.

Another vote cant hurt, check the battery. I just had a similar issue where i would get restricted performance code, check engine light etc then it would disappear. Replaced the battery and reset the check engine light and everything is back to normal. Btw the restricted performance message does not effect the cars drive-ability until a certain RPM point. Step down on that gas pedal and with the RPM above 3.5 or something like that you will feel the car refuse to accelerate any further. As far as I know its a safety measure to keep you from stressing the car when it senses something wrong.
