Default Coolant Temp gauge not working

Ok I had to chase down a oil leak yesterday so I put the car up on ramps to take the belly pan off and the Coolant Temp gauge was working. Finished fixing the oil leak re installed the pan drove around for a bit and noticed the Coolant Temp gauge was not working.
I did have it up on the ramps and my driveway for a good 20 mins at idle looking for oil leaks my driveway is sloped so the nose was pretty high up could the sensor not be touching the coolant? but if that was true why wont it read now and just stay stuck on the cold position?

Did I disconnect the wire from the sender? where is the sender located? weird all I did was take the pan off and change the oil filter HELP!

Check the coolant level first.

Thanks I went back 2 times and did just that.
Here is exactly what I did.
  1. drive up ramps
  2. open hood
  3. take off belly pan
  4. remove and replace oil filter
  5. start engine let idle for aprox 15 mins to check to see if new filter leaked.
  6. drove around block stopped and checked oil level and added 1/2 quart
  7. drove back up on ramps let idle another 5 mins checked for leaks
  8. reinstalled belly pan went for drive and gauge not working.

Hey Jag whats up, yea me too I haven't got a clue maybe the coolant is low I didnt check it. I'm thinking since I had it up on the ramps for so long maybe the sensor wasnt getting a reading thats why i need to figure out where the sensor is if its on top that may be the reason.

Ok I added coolant but it didn't really need it drove around for like 3 mins and gauge is working! The only thing I can think of is that since the front end was at such a high angle the sensor just couldn't get a reading.

That wasn't the problem then. Guess you'll just have to monitor and see what it does.

Yes I will, funny thing though as I first started to drive it was still on the cold position and the needle just shot right into the middle of the range. I had let her warm up a bit may 5 mins or so before i took off down the street

Hi Devo, and greetings,

How about firing up ETM and performing the inbuilt gauge test? See JTIS or your workshop manual for procedure, menu list and code table ... then post back. A cup of coolant is no fix ... it sounds to me like an intermittent electrical issue, which may yet return to be dealt with.

Best wishes,
Ken
