Default Timing Kit

It anticipation of replacing my timing chain tensioners, I purchased a timing kit so as to have all the correct tools. It looks like a very nice kit, but came with out any instructions on how to use it, or where to put the number of tools that are in the kit to do the job. It's one of those "if you don't know how to do the job correctly, don't waste the money on the tools" things. However, I spent the money, so now would like to know the correct way to use them.

Is there some instructions on how/where to use the tools when doing the job? Possibly a diagram or other instructions. I went to my copy of the Jaguar Engine Repair manual , but only found how and where to use two of the tools--The "JD 217 and the JD 218 tools, but that really was not as clear as I would like things to be.

Depending on you guys again,

Chuck

Since you have an '05 model, why are you changing tensioners?

Mikey--
Not changing them, just in anticipation in case I have too.

But, son bought a 2001 XJR and that's the real reason for the purchase. I'm sure they will need it. Car has 114000 on the clock. But, who knows what we may find.

BTW: Read a post some where on the forums where someone checked their later model (?) and found cracked metal tensioners. Will check where, if I can and post.

Hi Chuck

The JD217 tool is used to hold the sprocket on bolted to exhaust cam - 2 pins on tool line up with 2 holes on the sprocket. When torqueing the bolt for exhaust cam, you have a breaker bar in the tool to push opposite way when torqueing the bolt as its about 95ft lbs.

JD218 - these are supposed to be put into place between the primary tensioner piston and back of timing chain guide, then torque everything down. These aren't really needed

I've done many timing chain jobs on the 4.0L and 4.2L V8's - done it using these 2 tools, and done it without using them. Made no difference.

The 2 main tools you will need are the cam lock tools and the lock pin for the flywheel.

I'm not sure what year S-Type you have, but the flywheel lock pin will be different on the 4.0L from the XJ/XK.

I'm assuming you have the V8 since you have timing tools - the V6 doesn't require timing tools to replace the chains, guides and tensioners.

With that said - if you do in fact have the V8 - the power steering pump, a/c compressor and alternator will have to be unbolted from timing cover, along with the brackets they attach to as well.

What year is the S-Type?

With you're 01 XJR - the cam lock down tools will work on the 4.0L, but as I stated before, the flywheel/crank lock pin will be different. I think most of the aftermarket tool kits for this job include both.

You'll need to check the XJR to see if the primaries have been done as well. Most people just change the secondary. You can still see down if you look carefully once the cam cover is removed to see if they've been changed. If and when you do the chains/guides/tensioners on XJR - you don't need to remove A/C, P/S Pump or alternator as these are bolted directly to the block behind timing cover. In the S-Type , they were bolted to timing cover b/c of limited space in engine compartment.

The Workshop Manual has the instructions on the correct procedure and when and how to use the special tools. You can find vendors on the Internet who sell the Workshop Manuals as a PDF.
