My transmission fault light came on and the rpm's start going crazy and seems to happen when it's changing somewhere between 2nd and 3rd ...but I can pull over and turn the car off and restart it and it will be fine and the tf light goes off...it also started idling rough and put a smoke machine on it and found a vaccum leak ...a elbow tube was crimped bottom of the intake exhaust manifold which fixed the idling problem ...could this have started the whole problem or is it totally seperate...the two problems seemed to happen at the same time...thank you for any help...

You need to get some real information first. What are the codes? What is your car. You have to remember that we don't know anything about you or your car so more information is needed??

At this point I think you should have a shop that knows Jaguars to look at it. Sounds like multiple problem due to little or no maintenance. This really complicates things because the symptoms can mean multiple things.

tbird6..my car is a 2001 stype v6 3.0 86000 miles...not sure what else you need..... I live in a small town so there is no jag dealer...closest one is 100miles...so I took it to a local shop here ..

the computer did not even have a jaguar on it but the codes that showed up were lean codes bank 1 and bank 2....

I'm thinking the vaccum leak that we fixed was that...I have only had the car 7 months and first thing we did was maintance Oil change and fuel filter...but other than that I dont know if maintance was kept...does that help...

we are confused that we can turn the engine off and the transmission fault light goes off and runs fine for a while..does that sound like transmission or sensors???

I am hoping to pick ya'll brain because since I dont have a jag dealer close troubleshooting can be expensive ...any help would be appreciated

Hi Audreysue - do you know when the battery was installed? The 00 - 02 S Types (actually most Jaguar models) are very sensitive to battery charge and begin to exhibit phantom issues and false flag codes when the battery is going south.

I would start by having someone test the battery.

Now keep in mind the battery could pass the test but could still have 1 or more failing or borderline cells. Battery voltage should be in the 12.5V to 13.0+V area after testing. Anything less - get a new battery.

If the battery is more than 3-4 years old - might be a good investment to get it replaced. Just my $0.02 - Good Luck!

audreysue - Most auto parts stores like Autozone, Advanced and Pepboys will test the battery for free and I know Advanced provides you a print out of your battery test (if you ask). Looking forward to your findings...

 

abonano.... we checked the battery and it was a little weak so we put it on a fast charge and brought it up to 13 but it did not change anything...my question is doing the charge the same effect as a new battery and will it automatically reset itself or do we need to get the codes reset??? I hope this makes sense ...

 

audreysue - You would need to get the codes reset. If the battery was weak - the question now is how old is that battery? (There should be a date code on the battery) If your answer is (or the date code) 3 years or older - it would be a wise investment to get a new battery installed.

I thought I had a bad amp draw (so I thought) after shut down - before I started chasing "ghosts" - I had the battery tested - that test showed I had a charge of 12.7V and passed the test saying "needs charge only" - sure enough I tested each cell and had 1 weak and 1 dead cell out of 6 total...

I installed a new battery and my Jag roared back to life.

I would seriously think about getting a new battery installed and have the codes reset?

BTW - what actual "code(s)" did you get from the scanner? Post them here...

 

You may want to check your Alternator also. My car doesn't have the mileage yours does, but alternator went at 52k. All sorts of electrical havoc occurred thereafter. Start with the battery then check down.

 

ok sorry it took me so long to reply....the alternator is fine and took it to the jaguar dealership today and put it on computer ....p0735 code came up ...said the grear 5 ratio is incorrect and of course offered to put in a new transmission for 5grand... any suggestions ?? this code comes under the powertrain control module... is there a sensor you can change or have the transmission rebuilt instead of replaced...has anyone had this problem??

 

Audreysue, I would still look at the battery first - as far as the trans is concerned - a compitent shop can properly diagnose the P0735 issue (if it is indeed real and not a phantom code due to the battery) - more than likely a spring issue in the valve body - they can either figure out the cause of the P0735 issue, and hopefully repair.

 

Please do a search on that error code. I think you have a broken spring deep inside your transmission. If true it will require the pan to be dropped and the valve body removed to fix it. So be sure and change the filter and fluid when you do that. I would consider putting a new valve body in. Your transmission is known to have shift solenoid problems. It’s a very common transmission used in Millions of Fords. Any transmission shop should be familiar with the repair.

I had that done to my wife’s 2003 Lincoln LS when it was under factory warranty at about 38K miles. We now have 90K miles on it and it still shifts great!

Did you ever get to the bottom of this. My S type sport 2001 auto has a similar problem. I think water ingres in the boot has caused the light to come on and exhibit rough running. I suspect its got into the ecu. There are no fault codes on the screen. I've sealed the leak I hope and hoping the issue will go away or at least stabilise so I can take it in to the local specialist.

 

Yours does NOT sound the same unless you have the identical code. Do not fail to read the codes.

The "ecu" for engine & autobox is not in the boot.

If the ones in the boot are upset you'll need a jag dealer-type tool even to read their codes.
