Default Transmission shifting Long delay...

Anyone have this problem? When shifting car from park to reverse, or from reverse to drive, etc, it takes about 2-3 seconds for it to kick into that selection. I notice that on my car and have read many other s-type owners have that problem too. I also heard it was valve-body transmission related. Is this true? is it something I will just have to live with? Or is it a simple easy fix. I was thinking it was the gear shift cable, not guess not? thanks guys...

Very similar "problem" with the ZF as well as the Nag1 in my 300... So.. seems to be a common thing with "adaptive", "electronic" transmissions.

Default atf level

Can you check the fluid level on this box? I had this trouble on another vehicle and topping up the atf helped.

Does this have to be perfored after the car has been drivin for a while for the car to be hot? I did it on a 85 degree day with not driving the car much with a cold engine... and i did not notice the difference in my shifting.

Have you replaced any shift solenoids or the valve body? This transmission is well known for valve body problems. I finally convinced Ford when my wife’s 2003 Lincoln LS was still under warranty to replace it and quit trying to fix it.

Car now has 90K miles on it and shifts like a dream!! So the transmission is a good unit and will last a long time once the common problems are fixed.

Be sure and change fluid/filter and follow the proper fill instructions as was posted earlier. The transmission will shift badly if the fluid level is off. What does the fluid look like? Has it been changed?

To add... when getting the trans fluid/filter serviced - best to get the fluid/filter serviced every 20K miles or 2 years - advice coming from master transmission service tech that specializes in Ford trans units. (for 2000 - 2002 5R55N models)

The Ford 5R55N is VERY common and any half-way decent trans shop should know it well.

I believe Mercon V or VI is used for the 5R55N trans - about $6.00 - $8.00 per quart. As it was pointed out above - the 5R55N trans is very common.
