In simple terms, you can't. In lengthier terms - read existing threads about it and what CAN be done. There are a lot of them so just dip into a few.

That's an understatement, JagV8! Even when my wife owned my '02 ST (with Premium Sound option), I went as far as asking the DEALER - who could have made a lot of $ in custom work if it could be done - reasonably - and they flat out refused!

Plan B is was getting my TomTom GPS out of my truck, and buying a high quality cassette adapter for my iPad/iPod/Pandora devices. So far, I'm only lacking the luxury of a reverse camera that I could have gotten with newer head units.

Don't feel bad - many of these luxury cars make it nearly impossible to upgrade head units. I've run into this with Cadillac and Infiniti as well.

I think you have more options with a 2002 because it's older tech.

Its the Premium Sound unit. It CAN be done - provided that you use the backplane connectors from a donor head unit, and connect them to the low-level RCA outputs from the new head unit. You're right; there are more options, but there are no "kits" available from Crutchfield, nor are there any made by Sosche, therefore "plug and play" is out. If you're handy with a soldering iron, can read schematic and wiring diagrams, it CAN be done. To start off with, even known broken donor head units are $70 or so on Ebay - just to get the correct connectors as an assembly. If we can put a man on the moon, and build 100,000 ton floating airports (Nimitz class aircraft carriers), then surely one can jury-rig an adapter for a new head unit.

I forgot to add - that newer units tend to daisy chain themselves into diagnostic series circuits (like Cadillac), such that other functions in the vehicle are disabled, such as the gauge cluster, HVAC controls, etc (Cadillac) when the stock head unit is removed. Nasty business.

Back when I owned an X-Type I remember A LOT of discussions over on that list about upgrading the stock system. I suggest you surf over there and look around. I'm sure they are the same system.

I am almost sure they're not, for the original S-Type kind (1999-2003 USA).

Yes I did that but it's only for the radio/CD player but not the navigation.
