I've run a thread search on where to find engine numbers, but came up empty. Can anyone tell me where to look for the AJ-V8 engine number ?

Thanks in advance

The "cheat" way is ask a dealer, although that doesn't guarantee your engine is still the one they have on their database.

The location is described (badly?) in this https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/a...achmentid=2914

Here is a picture of what you are looking for. It will be tough to see with the engine in the car. It's on the left side of the engine block and almost directly behind the engine mount. Look for the big screw in freeze plug. I think it will be dirty so cleaning and a strong light "might" let you read it. Do you have a borescope by chance??

Unfortunately no, I don't have a bore scope.

Let us know if it's possible to read this with the engine in the car. It would be interesting!

Most of the numbers on the side of the block are the alpha/numeric coding for the piston/cylinder and crank bearing/journal sizing info. The serial number (manufacture time/date) is at the front 'B'bank side of the thermostat housing mount hole on many engines. Jaguar JEPC lists the number at the rear of the 'B'bank cylinder head on the bell housing casting area but all the engines I have are not numbered there. Check both places for your engine number.

Incorrect. Here is where the JTIS says to find the engine number. Remember this is for the S Type. Might be different for other models.

Automatic Transmission Number; The serial number of the transmission unit is displayed on a metal label or bar code (where equipped) attached to the transmission casing.

Engine Number (V6);The engine number is contained on a bar code label on the front cover and is also stamped in the cylinder block casting on the left hand side of the engine below the engine mounting.

Engine Number (V8);The serial number is stamped on an engine web on the left hand side of the cylinder block behind the engine mounting. The emission code is also located here, on the transmission flange.

Do you reckon those are the same places as in the Vehicle Specifications?

Jagv8:
Thanks for that document! I did not have a copy before you posted it. It only talks about the VIN which is on a sticker in the drivers door jam among other places. I could not find anything about where to look for the engine serial number?

Aargh! Sorry, I thought it was in there but it isn't!

(It's a handy PDF, though.)

I have to be honest, I didn't look for the engine no. on the car. I took JagV8's advice and e-mailed jaguarpartscenter.com and asked them if they could find out what my engine no. is and they e-mailed it back to me from the Jaguar data bank.

That's good to know! But I have ask; Why do you need this number? I usually supply the last 6 digits of the VIN to identify the car?

There are a number of engine parts that require you to know in which series of
engine numbers your engine is located
