Default 2002 transmission gearbox help

I recently purchased a 2002 x type. 3.0 auto. Test drive for 10 or so miles, no issue. Drive home (25 miles) no drivability issues.
next day, drive to the store (1 mile), gearbox fault code but make it home. Shift to reverse to put in garage and lose all forward gears but have reverse so I back into garage.
Battery needed replaced so I pull battery and days later installed new battery. I now have forward gears, so I drive down the street. Once I stop and park, I lose all forward gears again. So I reverse it home through the neighborhood lol 🤷*♂️
I research the symptoms and decide to check to see if TCM is wet, even though it hasn’t rained..it appears good.
Next, trans fluid change per info on here: drain 3.5 and add Castrol multi import. It was pretty bad looking so I did it twice and put lucas additive in it. Check level at 35 degrees C. Fluid level good and color acceptable. No forward gears but have reverse.
Check J-gate and inspect. It’s okay.
Disconnect linkage at transmission and click through the gears with the lever on trans: no forward gears, reverse works.
Thinking back to the battery issue, I pull the terminals and ground them for a day. Connect, problem still exists and gearbox fault displays once again.

Im confused. No one around here wants to touch the thing so I would appreciate any insight. I find it hard to believe the transmission needs rebuilt/replaced since I had driven it home and I had the issue but then had forward gears again. But if that’s what it is, I’m too far in to turn back.. I just need help with diagnosis at this stage. I will drop and swap it if I have to, but I’m not convinced.
I appreciate the knowledge on this forum and look forward to your thoughts.

Default Have you tried this?

Im having a similar issue but mine is fine when cold but after a short drive, the gears are all out of wack. I just bought the car. The previous owner replaced the J box but that didn't fix it. He gave me the original. Im going to replace the fluid tonight just because I am thinking it hasent been done and the car has 150K miles on it. then I will try the adjustments in this document.

Still could be a bad TCM. I'd get it electronically diagnosed.

Is there a test procedure I can follow to test the tcm? Checked that bushing and it appears to be okay from a visual test and clicks through gears as it should. Regardless of the tcm status, wouldn't the transmission shift into drive I disconnect linkage and at the transmission, manually select drive? Or does the tcm need to be functioning correctly for the drive gears to operate? I would think I would at least get a limp mode or something..
The tcm appears okay. No corrosion and in good condition. No Jaguar dealers near me. No one wants to touch this thing
