Diagnostic Scanner (for engine light)
So I've recently decided to purchase a new scanner to diagnose my vehicle and why the engine light is on.
I was wondering if this was compatible with the car, and how it would be used (where to connect it). It's a standard 16 pin OBD-II connector. It's my first time buying this tool so any feedback is appreciated.
Thanks guys

Good plan. It's almost impossible to maintain the vehicle without having access to a code reader.
The X-Type has a standard 16 pin OBD connector. I only have a pic of the location for RHD but look in the same place on the opposite end on the dash for LHD:
Torque Pro mentioned by disguay is becoming very popular but most scantools will work on the Jaguar. Some don't so check this thread for member recommended.

Don't rely on website definitions of the codes or those supplied by the scantool manufacturer as they are often inaccurate and misleading. Use the Jaguar definition list:

Disguay.. I'm still stuck with the blackberry haha. We all know there isn't many apps for it :P
GGG, thanks for the details and guidance. I will surely keep the index by my side and go through the steps. But one question, does is it have to be scanned on the RHD and LHD? Or just one side is fine?

..............then realised I don't know which side of the column the ignition key is on the LHD X-Type and it could look completely wrong!

Haha yeah that looks like the right spot, not the ignition key. Going to make my purchase with that scanner. Best price I can find for beginners so it will do the job I want. Thanks again G3.

I used one of these on my 2004 X-Type last week. It read the codes, but failed to clear the codes & extinguish the CEL. I sent it back to Amazon.
Fezz, I have done some playing with various code readers and since your car is a 2002, you should be fine with that code reader. The break over point between 2 variations of the OBD system seems to have occurred in early 2004 with the redesign and they went from the initial OBD setup to the CAN bus setup. So, things like the ELM327 with the Torque app will work on the early 2004 and earlier cars, but will not work on the later cars (atleast that is my experience, would love to hear how to make it work if this is not the case).
I also have the Actron 9250 and that seems to work on all vehicles. Haven't found one that it doesn't work on. I am using the ELM327 more though because the ELM allows me to see real time data with the car.

Thanks
mplatt, I am not familiar enough with the newer version of the system to adequately answer that. I would say to give some of the OBD vendors a call and see what they can work out for you. It may be that the ELM unit can not transfer data fast enough for what is needed.
