Default 2004 Jag X-Type 3.o AWD 112,000km

Im new to this forum. Bought a 2004 jag X-Tpe 3.0 AWD, last year. Did not indicate any unusual noise when I bought it at Auction. Was only able to start, select gears and check for noise, none. After getting it home, 50 km away it started to make a 'Clunk" noise when put into R from D. And P to R. Checked fron TC and jacked up car as per procedure found on this site. Only drained out 50 mls after tipping car, other way, added 250 mls. Still clunking in Reverse. Need to pull plug on rear TC and check oil. Need to grind some frame away to access ratchet wrench. Will do later today.<br />Question has anyone found a cause or solution to TC case clunking sound. Had the car lifted and was able to access rear TC and appears noise from there. Thanks Bill

Default 2004 Jag X-Type 3.o AWD 112,000km

Dell, Thank You so much for your reply and assistance.
I had a friend Mechanic look at it on the hoist. He really didn't want a darn thing to do with jags, He was rushed so all we had was the car in neutral and checked slack in drive shaft. No excessive play, no noises.in neutral. Disappointed. We should have had the car running.I went home lifted the car up on rear, as I was sure this was the origin of the clunk. Did a brave thing, while jacked had my wife set emergency brake and foot on brake" this proved my wife still loves me" and.go from D to R., then "Clunk". Put my long screwdriver to TC, my ear to it and "clunk" in R.
My experience in a Power Plant with cooling tower gear boxes, reminded me of wrong backlash setting. But after reading article on broken teeth that makes me shutter. Im afraid that is the issue. Its a shame the car other than that body and mechanical, electrical are excellent.
Not sure now if I really would tackle myself, to remove TC. Topped up front TC as per someones forum discussion. Drained 50 mls, fairly clean, added 250 mls. The rear TC I will need to grinf down the frame to have access to the 1/2 " plug, 3/8 square drive. I want to make sure this level is Ok, just out of principle and check off this on my list as done.
I really appreciate your time given me as a newbie. I think this forum is a wonderful tool and its people like you that make it such. I'm still learning the ropes on this forum to make my way around, even at 72 years f age.
Regards Bill

TC dying sucks. Contact member Dr. Dome if you want to buy a used one or Jasper transfercases for a $$$ rebuilt one.

Thanks again Dell
Looks like this is a marathon repair. Im 72 and dont know if I'm physically able to do this. My Carpenter expertise has been called upon by an acquaintance. Next 2 weeks finish work in a house. Even that is reaching my physical capacity. I'm going to take the next 2 weeks and ponder the problem. I will take it to a Jag dealer, just for problem verification. But I do know that is shaking the dice also.
Appreciate all the wonderful info. Thanks again, Bill
