aaron, from what you are descibing, you more than likely either have old spark plugs in the car and the need to be changed or you are getting some oil in the plug wells which is leading to a misfire. either way, getting the intake manifold off to look at things is going to be first on the list. because you are getting this far into the engine, i would advise that you plan on changing the plugs and also replacing the upper manifold gaskets. as you pull the plugs, you should get a good idea of what is happening.

must you replace the upper manifold gaskets? no. but, as these cars get older, this is being done to prevent future issues relating to vacuum leaks. besides, the gaskets are cheap and pulling the intake off takes a little bit of time and if you are in that far, might as well get it all aet up for the long haul.

if you need some help getting the intake off, let us know. there are a few write ups on how to remove the intake. lan about three hours to pull the intake, replace plugs, and then get it all back together. after you do it the first time, the follow on times will be in the two hour range.

Do the intake manifold gaskets need a sealer or do they get fitted dry?

Dry fit. Clean the mating surfaces. I used acetone on the metal surfaces and a lint-less cloth with a little warm distilled water on the non-metal surfaces.

I had an error code for a bad coil causing misfire. I pulled the intake and while it was off I made sure to do the spark plugs and change the one bad coil. Not a hard job, just take your time and don't drop anything into the motor. Now I did have a moment that frustrated me after the job was done. Within the week I had a new code, it was for the knock sensor.... That's under the intake. It's up to you but they do go bad and if you have the intake off I would do that too as the sensor is a cheap part.

P0333 is knock sensor fault.
P1647 is O2 sensor fault.

aaron: I fear the catalytic converter may be damaged. Hopefully someone has a more optimistic outlook. The indicators are: (1) a glowing red converter, and (2) a flashing CEL warning of exhaust conditions that can or already have damaged the converter.

Some folks revive damaged converters. Others replace them. Here's a few threads on both options. Again, I hope other's respond with a better prognosis.

Flashing MIL = misfires then and there so bad they're causing cat damage

Bad coils or some such but you need to find & fix the misfire cause ASAP.
