Default How to open front cupholder

Hey guys, if you look on the picture, you will notice on the right side, the top left spring is missing, I think its gone inside somehow. Does anybody know how I can open the cupholder and fix it..?

If I remember right you have to remove the console.

Default Yes the console must come out

It's not a spring actually. Do you really want to know how that works? The cup holder and its cup retaing tabs are wrapped with a rubber band. If only one isn't working and the other three are i would suspect that the nonfunctioning one is broken. May be worth taking apart to see if perhaps it just came off.

Default Oops

Sidewalk man is correct, the console must be removed. Torx screws under mat in cubby, torx screws under j-gate veneer, torx screws behind side carpet panels, carpet panels held with 1 pozidriv screw near j-gate and then friction clips. 20 minutes if you know what your doing tops.

To be honest i didn't get any kind of picture in my head on what you just said. Could I not just somehow lift the chrome ring around the cupholder..?

The cupholder is attached to the bottom of the console, if you pry on the chrome ring it will just break. Open console lid, remove junk from inside console, see rubber mat on bottom, remove mat to expose 3 torx screws. Look at carpeted panels between seats and center console near the j-gate and you will see 1 black pozidriv screw in each panel, remove these screws and pull carpet panels off. This will expose torx screws going through the console to the metal bracket attahed to floor, remove these screws. If auto trans open ashtray and pull up on j-gate veneer trim to remove, if manual trans just pull up on shifter surround anywhere. This will expose 2 more torx screws going down through console into metal bracket, remove those. Console is now free, lift from rear, disconnect dsc button if fitted, remove console and inspect cupholder.

IF you want to gouge it up.

It's not hard to remove the console, just take your time. he's telling you the locations of the screws to remove. Console, side panel, behind side panel, etc....

Yeah, what's up with the single cup holder business???? Sucks for the front seat passenger. Sometimes I let my gf put here drink in the cup holder and I put mine in one of the cup holders in the rear. It's kind of a reach, but I do it for her. lol

Is it a standard vs automatic thing? I've never seen anything like that. What year is yours?

Mine is a 2002, Sport. I would rather the designers have moved the DSC button (traction control) somewhere else and put in a 2nd cup holder.

Two people on a road trip, things might get dicey.

That's really odd. My traction control button is in the same place, I have a 2004 sport model (wagon though) but 2 cup holders, 1 in front of the other like everyone elses I've ever seen. Tell me, does your arm rest on the console move forward?

Yes, the console arm rest moves forward on a 2002/2003. They had additional space to work with there and shoe horned in the extra cup holder without really changing much of the layout for 2004+...

I just buy things in bottles with a lid and lay them in the lower door cargo bin if more than one cupholder is needed.

I only have one cup holder in mine also, but I don't have a traction control button on my 02 x-type 2.5. I still have 4 wheel drive, but no traction button at all, and I never have any problems with traction. What's the difference with the traction button or without?
