Default Just when everything was running smooth.

So last night I was coming back from Calgary's, new mall. I was driving the speed limit, and as I went to pass a semi trailer truck. The rpm went to about 3300, and droped to 3000, and then the gear box fault message came on, aswell as the yellow caution light. The car drove fine, still accelereated, no probelms in any gears So once I dropped my friend I drove home turned it off and on again...nothing no probelms at all, started up just fine but the light was still still there, no check engine light or anything.

What gives?

Disco, get the codes read. They are still inside the computer even though the light is off. From the sounds of things, you are starting to suffer the dreaded throttlebody problem. But, before we start just tossing parts at the situation, lets see what the codes say. That may lead us in a more direct path to getting the problem fixed.

The vehicle seems to be operating fine, I was wondering if I should still drive it?

My '04 does that all the time now. I will be at highway speed or decelerating, and the RPMs will jump, then the Gearbox Fault and amber lozenge light up.

The OBDII code I get is P0915, which is a 'gear selector out of range' problem. It means that the input to the TCM from the gear shift does not agree with the position of the gear selector switch on the transmission.

This particular code does not affect the cruise control so I have ignored it for the last 8 months.

Additional note: The P0915 code was added to the 2004 1/4 model year and did not exist in the OBDII of older X-Types. I don't know what code this problem would show up as on an `02 or `03.

P1111 is not a fault code. It is a special designator Jaguar uses meaning system ready, drive cycles completed after the last fault event. P1000, on the other hand, means system not ready, or drive cycles not completed after the last recorded fault event.

P1111 and P1000 cannot be erased.

So...according to the computer...my cars okay?
Then why did the light come on?

possibilities..
- the one you described in the early post
- I read that sometimes, water builds up in The foot wells cuase a sensor or harness to though codes if it gets wet
- vibrations cuasing it come on

any other ideas, should I leave it be?

Disco, more than likely, your cats are starting to wear out and what you are seeing is the O2 sensors are seeing the limits being approached. So, occasionally, when you are driving, the limits will be exceeded, causing the light to come on. But, this is just speculation. You can try running a bottle of gas treatment through the car and seeing if you can possibly burn out some of the carbon in the cat. Sometimes it works, some times it don't.

Thats what my friend at the shop said to, he says my cats might be plugged with carbon, he also told me this would rob the car of power, he didnt have time for a test drive cuase he had to get back to work. he told me itd not a throttle body probelm as far as he can tell.

Now, that leaves the question, should I get the cats cleared out, or replaced, which is costly according to my chemistry experience, cause they have precious metals that are in them, as well as pulling them out. or should i leave it be

It could be that on yours, the transmission code that was logged can't be read by a standard OBDII code reader. Some transmission and other codes require a more specialized code reader to access them.

Thermo, I have an 04 X Type, 2.5 with a similar condition as previously posted.
After car is warm, on acceleration get check engine light with code P0340.
Will try the gas treatment as suggested. If you could please answer a couple questions.
1. How do you remove LH cat? (one near firewall) does the front sub frame have to be removed?
2. Are the cats ceramic honeycomb?
3. Can you just remove ceramic and run straight?
Thanks...David

That sound you heard could be a wheel weight that came loose. You did recently change tires on the car. Only speculation and it doesn't happen often, but is a possibility. Had that happen to me once and the sound is kind catches you by surprise for sure.
