Default New pondering, S-Type R calipers on X-Type?

I am wondering if it would be possible to slip the S-Type R calipers (and more than likely rotors) on to an X-Type. I realize this will possibly mean being limited to 17" rims (not a problem there). I guess my bigger question would be the offset between the hub and where the rotor sets. I know they use the same bolt pattern, the mounting should be fairly similar (but don't know for certain). I can only imagine what the car would brake like then as I know my car already stops pretty good. Hmmmmmm. May have to see what I can do about doing a little bit of measuring and seeing what one can find out.

The other variation to this would be getting say the XJR or XKR brake setups and having that on the car. That would probably mean 20" rims, but, just the thought of the ability to stop on a dime (almost literally). Hmmmmmmm.

thermo, I have had this same thought before and basically turned down the idea after throwing on some new pads. I didn't get to measuring the area for the calipers, but my thought was just to buy them and if the didn't fit, I would sell them again. After parking next to an str, I did a bit of hand measurement and found that the rear caliper should fit fine with my 18 inch wheels, but I wasn't able to decide on the front calipers completely. I would really like to know what you find though!

An easier option is to get your hands on the bigger calipers & discs from the Ford Focus ST225 / 2.5T.

It's been done in the UK several times, and I was planning on doing it myself at some stage. It's basically a direct bolt-on.

You need the calipers left & right, plus the mounting bracket from the Focus (to accommodate the bigger discs). The bigger Focus discs go straight on the standard hub.

I don't think you should have any issues running S Type R Brembo calipers and rotors, you would just need to have some custom caliper mounting brackets and brake lines made. If you're doing this upgrade, you'd probably want to upgrade to SS braided lines anyway which you can have made for less than $150 per set.

I've already asked this question of a few different people including techs at the dealer, my current mechanic who is a Jaguar specialist with 50 years of experience under their hoods, and junkyard people... They all told me the caliper mounting brackets are different.

As for wheel sizing... The S Type R has 14.3" front rotors which won't fit under anything less than an 18" wheel with the right offsets.

Cambo351, would you happen to have more info on this as in what year ST225 and/or part numbers? How about a link to any more info? This sounds like a much more straight forward swap than what I was looking into.

I don't know, after seeing the size difference in this thread: Print Post - ASBO's are ON! (Pics & How-to) - FordMondeo.org I'm not sure those are the calipers I want to go with. I might stick with my original plan of larger rotors and used Brembos or Alcons.

I have been thinking about doing this forever, i think i might give it a go. Prob just have to find a cnc shop to fab up custom brackets or adapters. I would **** myself after seeing yhat on my x type, especially with the new look im going for.

If you know anybody that's halfway decent with CAD you could probably measure up the brackets you'd need and upload a CAD image of them to emachineshop.com. It would most likely cost quite a bit less than taking it to somebody else. Things you'd have to look out for is the centerbore and brake line attachments. Most of the rotors I've been looking at for the X-Type are much larger than the 63.5mm centerbore which might lead to some wobbly action of the rotor. As long as the rotor fits tight against the studs it should be ok. If I wasn't so funds challenged right now I'd be doing just that in anticipation of the next racing season but alas, I'm broke. LOL

Anyway, I've attached an image of pretty much what the bracket _could_ look like, this is the exact bracket setup I had to put on my SVT Contour when I fitted 13" Cobra brakes and the twin piston PBR calipers.

Any updates? I need to upgrade the brakes on my car but I'm a little low on funds so I have to wait. Hoping somebody does something soon with an easy to copy bracket design. Definitely need better brakes for the track...

ufoz, can you get your hands on a set of calipers on the cheap?

Send me a sketch with dimensions (sizes) and I will draw it up in CAD or model it in 3D.

There are 2 different sizes of calipers that fit the xtype at least in the rear. when i did my brake overhaul i bought pads(by accident) that were bigger than what was on the car. come to find out there was a bigger caliper for rear. i wound up buying the larger caliper for the rear which is about 20% more pad and mounted with the original mounting bracket. not sure if this is s-type size or not or they made 2 different sizes over the years on the xtype. im using it on stock 17in rims. if remember correctly the pads were same size on front and rear when i started out. now rears are about 20% more pad than front

It's simply larger pads, not rotors, right?

Also have been thinking about this for a few months already. But I'm curious, is it possible to fit any other calipers (for example from a Porsche Cayenne) than the jaguar's?

You can fit just about any caliper you want on the car, it's simply a matter of getting the brackets made. (I have a line on somebody that will do it for around $200-400 a set.) I'm in a bit of a financial mess right now (who isn't with this economy?) or I would be doing this exact upgrade right now. I really need to upgrade the brakes before I get back to the track any time soon. (
The calipers I've been contemplating are STR Brembos, Porsche Brembos and the S60R/V70R calipers. Maybe even some used Alcons or AP Racing, too. I've got my eyes on a few different rotors but every option out there will require some type of modification to either the centerbore and/or the bolt pattern. It really is a simple project, it's simply a matter of getting the calipers centered on the proper rotors (why would you upgrade your calipers without upgrading the tiny rotors found on our cars?), creating brackets to bolt them up, finding the right fittings to get some SS brake lines on here and matching up the right brake booster.
Speaking of, does anybody know what size the pistons in both the X-Type and STR brake boosters are? And whether the STR booster will fit on an X-Type?
