Default New X Type Buyer

Hi guys. Im in the market for a family car now that we have a need for one. I found that this car fits the bill. 4 doors, looks nice, reliable, fun to drive.

So I found that Im liking the price and looks of a 04 3.0 AWD with 140k on it and is super clean for $2800. What things should I look for when I got to look at it and what should I look for when I drive it?

Do these things have any maintenance issues or common problems?

the 3.0's and 2.5's are very reliable.

just make sure to check the differential and transmission for any leaks.
and the suspension

Drove my first X type today. Not a great example I dont think. Engine ran great and tranny shifted extremely smooth. However, the rear of the car wobbled around on large uneven bumps and corners. The front suspension clunked around as well. Then I got on it a little bit and got up to 50 mph and I think I heard the noise the transfer case makes when its on the way out. It was a low pitch rattle coming from the engine bay. He was asking $2900 and I think its high given the work needed. Interior was in good shape and the body was good besides some paint fade in a few spots.

just no buying an awd luxury car for such a low price your getting a steal,so you may have to spend a little money on suspension to bring it back to new ,and even then you still got a bargain

Not worried about the suspension. I read the transfer case is about $3k to replace. That plus the car is more than its worth.

rrainey: For whatever it's worth, I concur with your train of thought. A loose rear suspension can be fixed for $100 - $300 in parts (lower front control arms, upper adjustable control arms and Bilstein shocks) and isn't difficult to do yourself, if you're handy with tools, want to learn, and have a little time and patience. Replacing a worn-out transfer case, on the other hand, takes more $'s, time, effort and expertise.

Default My Five Cents Worth

Shop around a little more (if that was the first one you drove). X-Types are plentiful and I shopped hard for one solid year until I found one that spoke to my gut reaction. If you have a great mechanic or can do work yourself, then go for it. Also, if you get one, join your Local Jaguar Club. The Clubs in the North American Jaguar Club group are a valuable tool! Well worth your yearly membership fee. Good luck!
