Default Oil Pan Gasket

Is it very complicated to replace my oil pan gasket? How long does it take?

I haven't looked specifically at the Jaguar oil pan, but I have done other cars... It is pretty straight forward. Drain the oil, remove pan, clean off old gasket, replace, and refill with oil. It shouldn't take too long to do.

On many cars you get screwed by one stupid bolt...I haven't looked at our x's in particular but usually you are able to get every bolt but one out and that one lone bolt has some stupid thing in front of it you must take all that off to get one bolt off. If I remember correctly when I looked at mine though I don't think there was anything in the way...for my wife's moms neon I could get every bolt off but one and than I had to take off a motor mount and another bracket to get at it otherwise easy as could be...

I recently took my 02 x-type to the dealer with a leak (oil pan gasket suspected) but they replaced the front crank seal instead and it does seem to have fixed the problem. However, I believe you'll find replacing the oil pan gasket is quite complicated and should you wish the dealer to do this for you - rather expensive too (circa £500 / approx 6 hours labour time) - sorry mate...

6 hours of labor!!!!! Do they pull the motor and do it outside the car? lol

There must be something in front of the bolts or blocking the removal of the oil pan that requires disassembly. I personally haven't been under my car to look at it yet, so I don't know for sure. Just crawl under there and follow the edges of the oil pan. If you can see all the bolts and get to them, and can pull the pan out of there once the bolts are removed, the job is not tough at all... But if you can't, it may be pretty involved.

Kenzed is right.
Its a bit of a lengthy job as the axle has to be dropped (at least on AWD models).

BuckMR2,
Thanks - I think they mentioned the sub-frame would have to be dropped and possibly something else?

Yes when I said axle I meant sub frame. There is a seperate section on this in the JTIS on removing this alone.
Once this is removed there are other items toremove like:-
accessory drive belt,an exhaust clamp,
cat bracket (plus one to be loosened),
repositioning of the A/C compressor,
then the removal of the sump,by removing 15 bolts (2 are longer than the other 13).
Good luck...

Well this may be a coincidence but I discovered my leak in a very similar way (after oil change where the oil may not have been to the same standard as what the dealer would have used). Sometimes, I used tocatch a slight oil smell on longer runs as well. There's no doubt the work done by the dealer has made things a lot better but I still suspect there is the slightest leak coming from somewhere else too. It's difficult because of course, the oil runs as it gets hot making it hard to see where it originates from. I think it's down toa slight leak from the pan gasketbut my dealer keeps recommendingthat the residue is washed away and left for a few weeks more before concluding either way.

I'd say that is a logical assumption on their part...I'd steam clean the are down there to figure out what is going on...make sure it isn't leaking...also make sure you do look before you change your oil again as its almost impossible from keeping oil leaking allover when changing the oil...
