I recently noticed a strange whirling noise at about 30mph with a slight vibration that seams to disapate as speed increases. Its not high pitch as others have claimed prior to replacing their driveshafts.
Had it up on a lift running and it sounds like its coming from the tranny.
Has anyone had a similar problem? Any ideas what to look for?

 

I posted the same problem about 4 months back, no response. 30km/h as well, decreasing speed...and then increasing. This ONLY happens at low temperatures though, so under 10° celsius and usually when I'm turning.

 

I would be willing to bet that both of these are propshafts, especially because of the speed at which it starts to happen and because you hear it when it's colder out.Luckily mine when out while still under warranty

 

How expensive is it to replace? And is it serious enough to be replaced?

 

It's abbout $1000 to replace. It isn't anything serious and there are write ups on here explaining how to lube the propshaft bearing. It's really the bearing that makes the noise, but you have to replace the whole thing. It's more annoying than something serious. Surf around on here, there is a TON written up about it. When the dealer did mine it took about an hour total.

 

I agree. This was happening to my wifes Jag last year and we replaced to prop shaft. I want to say it was around $1000 at the dealer.

 

Bingo...You guys were right. About 2 weeks ago it was recomended by my mechanic to replace my original propshaft cause the center bearing boot was shot and the mount was bent a bit. So I called my used Jag part guy and he had one so I had them swapped as his seemed in better shape then mine. Thats when I started to notice the noise.
I requested my mechanic to swap it back with the old one just to see if that was it, and it was!!!
I'm going to keep my old one in there for now until I hear a noise again. My Jag parts guy is a good guy and he'll take it back or give my a credit as I sure I'll be needing additional parts.

 

Yeah I can't justify or afford that for a car I paid $3300 for =/ I'll look into lubricating it.

 

It was $100 for the used drive shaft so no big deal. I only paid $4500 for my Jag. Besides I'll get my money back for my parts guy.

 

Here is what we did 'back in the day' when the cars were under warranty and we had to fix them for the customers when Jaguar was still trying to figure out what was going on.

Valuable information indeed. Atleast there are options to hiding the whining noise. I have been experiencing this noise for the past four years.

So the really fix is to replace the propshaft? Because I think the remedies stated are just to prevent the noise from being heard in the cabin.
