Go back to your tire dealer and have them check each tire and wheel
for balance.

majorami, a few things can cause a wobble like you are seeing. The most likely is the car being out of alignment. This will also tend to eat up the inside edges of your tires. If the alignment was done with the tires, then odds are you are looking at a bent rim. That will also give you grief. You can try switching the front and rear tire positions (ie fronts to the rear, rears to the front) to see if the condition changes. If it does, then this pretty much points to a bent rim. A lot of members have had bent rims.

After that, you are looking at something that is worn in the front end. I would start with opening the hood/bonnet of the car and looking at the top of the struts as you push down on the front end of the car. If you see them move, your strut bearings need changed (probably time for new shocks too). After that, with the help of someone, push down on the front of the car and see if you can see the suspension parts moving not how they should be.

I know that the ball joints are shot and plan to change them very soon the vibration is not in the wheels I just had all new tires put on and was there when they were mounted. The vibration is like an out of balance condition it shakes so bad that the clove box door rattles. This weekend I plan to take a very close look at the drive shafts and when I do the ball joints look at the half shafts. Question Auto Zone said I had to buy a arms to get the ball joints is this real. I have only change a arms when they were bent on other cars. Michigan roads are horrible right now the road in the picture would be great.

majorami, just because the wheels are new does not mean that the rims are not bent. I had a bent rim and when it was spinning on the balancer, it looked good. But, if you rolled the tire slowly and paid close attention, you could see the rim wobble a little . It will also balance. That is why I say to rotate the tires front to back and back to front to see if things change.

As for the ball joints, there is some truth to what you are being told. The factory ones are riveted in place. So, to keep things simple, you will end up replacing the whole a-arm. But, there are companies out there that sell the ball joints only and then you have to grind off the rivets and then bolt the new ball joints in place (the ball joints normally come with the new bolts). So, depending on how you buy the ball joints will define what all you need to do.

I bought a pair from an Internet site. I will take your advise and check the wheels I think I will pull the right front and test.

And maybe the roll restrictor (a.k.a. the dogbone)?

Hi Marjoram.

As an experienced tyre fitter 8 years+. I have you say that just cause you were there when They fitted the tyres doesn't mean They balanced them correctly. The balancer might have been set up wrong or something stuck to the balancer shaft that made the wheels not sit right or not to be funny the guy might not have a clue how to do it correctly. No not joking the amount of times we had a customer comer to us after getting tyres fitted else where and we had to rebalance his wheels cause they had counter balanced the wheels Is amazing. Any way with All his respect to Thermo wheel alignment Will never cause a vibration unless it's out but a HUGE amount. And it would be there at All speeds not just 70. General rule of thumb. Any shake/vibration from wheels under 45mph is a mishaped tyre or bent rim. Any shake that shows up at only higher speeds 50> is a balance issue. Get the tyre balance checked where you got them fitted. When we doe this and it shows up as being out and we fitted them we obviously fix it for free. I can't imagine your tyre shop being different.

Hi again 2 things I forgot to say 1 Did the shake start straight after getting the tyres fitted? If so then more than likely balancing 2 if already shaking before then if your ball joints are shot then yes this could be the issue if they are so bad there rattling about hence vibration. But being that bad would mean your car is in dangerous condition and need to be off the road until fixed if those joints pop out while driving at any speed your wheels are going to go under the car or worse fly loose and the rest doesn't bear thinking about.

Hope you get it sorted.

Thanks for your help I purchased the car summer before in Kentucky being a back yard mechanic I thought it might be fun to fix the car. The drive home had the shake. So I don't know when it started. I do know that both the front ball joints are in bad need of changing. Parts should be here today. when I jack the car the both wheels move out at the bottom. I plan on changing them this weekend. I will check the trans mount and clean the wheel sensors at the same time. Is there any way I can check trans oil levels?

majorami, the way that you check the trans oil level is to get the tranny up to temp and then you block the front wheels and put the car in drive. You then remove the top plug on the side of the tranny. If oil comes out, it is over filled. You may need to take something like a q-tip or a thin stick and stick it in the hole just enough to see if oil is up at the edge of the hole. If not, add fluid to bring the level to the edge of the hole.

AND FOR HELL'S SAKE, if you do check level this way read the forum posts (mine included) for very detailed pictures and location of the correct plug to remove. Removing the wrong one buggers your transmission!!

Here's just one example, read multiple until you feel confident in removing the correct one.
