2014 3.0 AWD XF "Gearbox Fault" Can not engage Drive or Reverse
Hi All,
I'm looking for input on my little issue with the wife's car.
2014 XF 3.0 AWD
56,000 Km (Has the Extended warranty but shop is over an hour away)
Wife did a bunch of short trips yesterday, weather was -18 to -26 C so she relied a lot on the heated steering, seats and electric defrost front and rear. She parks it in our attached garage which usually stays around 0C in this weather but I found the man door was not properly shut and it was a baumy -24C this morning in the garage (-35C outside). The car started without issue (Which is more than I can say about the 2010 XF parked outside and plugged in) but when you shift into "R" or "D", the yellow warning came up "Gearbox Fault" and will not engage to move. Turning off and restarting did not change anything, as soon as you turn the dial to move, the warning activates.
The usual culprit is the battery, well, low voltage. I also found that there could be moisture concerns so I am currently warming the garage back up, placed a charger on the battery and once decent enough to play around, I will connect the continuous voltage supply and run a diagnostic on the car. I'll post my results later today.
My question is this; Usually even with a low battery and the "Gearbox Fault" warning on, I see that the vehicle can still be driven, why would it look as if all is fine except for the yellow warning, shift with indicators working both on the console and dash, all other features operational but it will not engage the transmission for movement? I'll have more information later today once I run the software.
Thanks for reading this mess and anything you might think of will definitely help.

Thanks George05,
Just finished running the SDD and had a few strange surprises. I also forgot to mention that when I turn the selector on "R" or "D", they flash on both the console and the dash but they do not engage the transmission.
This is what I found out once I ran the diagnostic. (This is the first time I ran SDD on this car, it was always the dealership prior)
1. All my DTC for the year are showing as occurring in the last month (Nearly 18,000 Km in 36 days... impressive since it was parked most of Dec...)
2. No DTC for this current problem
3. My continuous power supply (schumacher inc 100) is set to 13.5v and verified by multimeter, the car (SDD software) tells me it is only at 11.8v I used my CTek to charge the battery which eventually got it to read at 12.5v so I can properly run the software for a short time. (All connections to the battery are pos to pos, neg to spare tire/tyre tee grounding) Also tested the Schumacher on the 2010 XF and was reading perfectly.
It looks like I'm loading this on a flatbed and sending to the shop. I did notice that in the SDD, it indicated a software update for the transfer case but with the readings I'm getting and it's still has coverage, I think it would be better at the dealership. Unfortunately every time I took a car to them this year, I get it back with a new problem...

I found this post by hughey with the reply by Ngarara about the "soft Lock" interesting, didn't help my situation but interesting. Got me thinking it might have other influences acting on this problem.

Thought I would just throw an update to this.
Found it to be an electrical/computer issue, I could place into park and neutral with the car rolling in neutral but not either drive or reverse. After disconnecting the battery for 15 minutes, I found no change but after leaving off the POS connection on the battery for over an hour and reconnecting, it now works normal again. I still can not find any codes popping up for this.
I have sent it to the shop and can update once I hear back.

HI 3kgtjunkie,
Going through the report from the dealership with our service rep, it took some time to get an answer and even that was not clear. Let me go through two of the points outlined above;
1. As for all the DTC showing in the month of Dec, their Tech states that this is normal sometimes. I questioned more into it and he wished to know what diagnostic software i was using, once he found out it was JLR SDD, he first said I shouldn't have access to it and once I explained my subscription on TOPIx, he felt that it needed to be looked into more and added a note in the file for both the display and the odd increase in mileage. They (The dealership or more directly, the service Rep and Manager also wanted to know if I could complete my day's travels with both cars to see any discrepancy with the mileage. I have noticed over the past couple of weeks that the 2014 will have anywhere between 1.4 km - 6.3 km more than the 2010 per 100 km distance. this too is going on file and they are waiting for a recommendation as to direction. (Original rims and replaced original tyres with the same Continentals, I even ensured that the 2010 parked farther and traveled a bit longer so it was not just a logistics and placement discrepancy in my evaluations . )
2. As for the gearbox fault, although the temperature in the garage was -24C that day and I turned the heater on to keep around +4C, the system registered the air intake at -43C and shut itself down for safety (According to the Technician anyway, as the 2010 is usually just covered outside and I never seen this on it even after starting it later that day... boy was it not happy about that) Disconnecting the battery for the hour and a bit allowed for a new reading and eliminated the warning.
So... as you can see, no real solid answers to date.
