Was reading another members cooling fan replacement thread and thought about how I've never heard my cooling fan run since I bought the car in Nov. Been so cold here in CA, AC was not run but I finally needed AC last week, still no cooling fan and AC was warm? Defroster..still no fan, car has never run hot but I took it in to JLAH, cooling fan controls were gone, the new fan is a different part# which usually means a change was done to that part. AC was low on Freon due to a condenser leak, 4 banger turbo really sucks for the XF service loaner I have, but I managed to get a dam speeding ticket..lol

 

You need to take to your dealer. There was an update flash for the computer that fixes this issue. Mine works perfectly now.

 

I am glad that it works for you now that the dealer has repaired it. But i am wondering how that many parts could go wrong. I also agree with you that the turbo 4 banger is kind of a dog. When I was shopping for my XF, I figured out that I needed a V8.

 

Got Higgins back on Thursday, apparently the formulation of R134 freon Jag uses smells like burning coolant when it gets out, as I had smelled what I thought was burning coolant. Total cost to Replace the AC condenser and cooling fan and cooling fan controller $2500. THANK GOD FOR SERVICE CONTRACT WARRANTIES1

 

Wow that's really early for a condenser to spring a leak. Did it get physically damaged from driving?

 

I had to have a leaking condenser replaced on my 2009 and the dealer kept asking me did I get into an accident. The answer being "no" and the car gets driven less than 4K a year. Luckily at the time it was covered under warranty because it was $1100 fix. I often wondered if anyone else had the same experience.

 

Maybe the condenser is easily hit by rocks.

 

Well, if it is like my XF, there is no way that rocks can get to the condenser without doing major damage to the front of the ve3hicle. The underbody portion is enclosed by a full belly pan under the bumper. And the grille areas are composed of a plastic mesh that is not coarse enough to allow for any significant size rocks to hit the condenser. It would take a significant sized piece to pierce the condenser and result in a leak.

 

No accidents, and if you look at the way the nose of the XF is built there's no exposure of the AC condenser to debris?

 

If you test the condenser and find the leak, you can use a magnifying glass and see how the damage occurred. If the edge of the leak is bent outwards, then it is metal failure due to the manufacturing process or possibly from overcharging. If it is bent inward, then it indicates a puncture of some sort by a foreign object or stress because it was installed incorrectly.
