Default Large Clacking Noise followed minutes later by Low Oil Pressure????

Hello

I am new to this forum and have just taken possession of a 2010 Jaguar XF 3.0 Luxury, after trading in my 2008 CLS.

Very nice car. After driving it away from the garage I smelt a very light oil burning smell that, but nothing major - wife thought it was cars in front. I was not sure.

I drove it for around 100 miles then, yesterday took it for a little ride, and just tried the dynamic mode for a bit of fun. Went to the shops, got back in started and all was fine. Went to petrol station and put in diesel. Started it and then I heard a clack clack type noise repeating. No warnings were showing, but nevertheless drove home at a low speed doing about 1100rpm.

15 minutes later the ride Low Oil Pressure sign came on. This all started to frighten me, yet no other lights on. Got home - there was no smell of oil, stream or anything else strange but the clacking.knocking sound was really loud.

next day i check the oil level and its says OK. I know I will ring the garage tomorrow and I am covered by the Consumer Act of Oct 2015.

But what has caused this and what do we think it is ? Last time I heard this kind of sound was when an exhaust manifold had gone.

Hoping someone knowledgeable will shine some light on this as changing from Merc to Jag is starting to make me regret it.

A diesel engine in the US ? I thought Jaguar only sold petrol-engine cars there.

First off, what is the mileage on the car ? The 3-litre diesel is reckoned to be a very good engine, (the previous 2.7 litre a lot less so), but like all diesels they can suffer from engine oil dilution from the diesel fuel if lots of short journeys are undertaken. It could be one or more of your big-end bearings have gone due to this. However, get the car examined by a Jaguar technician asap. Was the car some sort of "special deal at a low price", or maybe a private sale ? Any warranty with the car ?

Have you evidence of regular servicing and maintenance ? As I said above, the 3 litre diesel has no particular problems reported, and in fact, my local independent shop who maintain my X350 said the XF is a very good car and they get little trouble reported with them.

Unless I'm grossly mistaken, the only engines available in the '09 XF, in America were 5.0 liter V-8s.......one naturally aspirated, fuel injected, the other a supercharged, fuel injected engine.

SO, if you put diesel fuel in it, GOOD LUCK!!!!

And NO, the Consumer Act of 2015 doesn't cover stupidity.............

Better not to rush to judgment too hastily, I think. The car is a 2010 BTW, and this forum is here to help people.

Sorry, that was a "typo" on my part. With respect to the OP, he didn't say specifically, where he was, but his info says "Boston" for a location, and I'm sure to many people, "Boston" would be interpreted as Boston, Massachusetts, USA, therefore the mention that XFs only came with gas fired V-8s.....

Back on topic....

It don't sound good..If the Oil pump went it might have shed some metal into the engine...If one of the main rod bearing spun or something like that to cause oil pressure drop, this is also bad news...Have it checked and let us know...

If ya get a light, or its not sounding right SHUT IT DOWN, but DPK said it, sounds like a spun cam or rod bearing. That "clacking sound" is usually the lifters going metal to metal on the cam..

Don't even start the engine again unless the seller tells you to and query them are they sure.

May well need a new engine.

This is why we encourage people to put a full description of where they live and not some just the name of the city or worse yet some cryptic abbreviation or slang.

Not everybody knows that Boston Massachusetts is named after Boston England.

OK is the state of Oklahoma in the United States of America. OKC is Oklahoma City. Kinda like NYC is New York City.
