Default Rare Codes and Good Price

Met a person that wants to sell a 2009 XF 4.2 non sc, with 77K on it for $4800, but says he has computer problems and was that way when he bought it.. I already suggested the battery issue and he shows that a Duralast was put in 10/21/2019. He has the following codes and these together or separately appear to be rare: Clearly the last 3 are the most crucial. He does not have a multi-meter and will see the battery voltage tomorrow. Said he tried to run/jumper power to it from a Honda and cleared the codes and they came back- I am dubious that that would make sense.

P2228 (barometric pressure circuit low)
P0197 (engine oil temp sensor low)
P0072 (ambient air temp sensor circuit low)
P0607 (control Module performance)
P0601 (internal control module memory check sum error)
P2105 (throttle actuator control system forced engine shutdown)

If i knew the car could be fixed with a minimum of effort I would buy it.

Do you think that someone else tried to upgrade the firmware and bricked the ECU by not know what they were doing?

I have the SDD 1.33 and could probably reflash the ECU- would only do so before I bought it.

Any ideas or thoughts. Does someone repair the ECU without going and being robbed by the dealer.

I noticed a large number on Ebay for reasonable prices.

I appreciate any thoughts or ideas.

First thing I thought of was a wire harness problem and/or water in the plug or the PCM itself. If your serious I would get the electrical diagrams out and see if any of those things are tied together somewhere.
Also maybe help him clear the codes and then read again? Don't know if you can do that with out a battery tender but I think you have one?

So how long has he owned the car ? It could be that he bought it unseen, then found the fault displays and took it to a shop for the codes to be read. He could have then been told it's going to cost a lot of money to fix, whereupon he put it up for sale. I get the distinct impression he is being very economical with the truth.

This car is best avoided, frankly.

The guy is an auto broker and has bought many cars with a CEL and the fix was simple. This one was more puzzling than a quick fix. He did talk to one shop that wanted to get a new ECU from Jag and was going to charge him $1600 for the part. I see that Ebay has many on there for $250. It has a very clean Carfax. The only issue was when there was 16k on the car and Jag replaced the Transmission range switch. So I have no idea as to why the out of the blue ECU problems.

He cleared the codes and left the battery off overnight, but still gets the codes. The water idea is a good thought.

Thanks

There was already replies to your post about this vehicle on X260 forum so I've moved that one over here and then merged the two threads together.

The X250 uses extended codes in the format Pxxxx yy. Having diagnostics which can read the extensions makes a big difference to interpretation. For example:

P0601 has been interpreted simply as internal control module memory check sum error and attributed to the ECM. This is only part of the story.

P0601 41: Internal Control Module Memory Check Sum Error - software error or TCM failure
P0601 43: Internal Control Module Memory Check Sum Error - special memory failure
P0601 45: Internal Control Module Memory Check Sum Error - program memory failure

I would want to run an SDD session on it before parting with any money.

Thanks Graham: He is using a generic scanner- so I guess we are just getting part of the story I did take note that after every code was /$07E8, but I think that is just indigenous to generic scanners.

Will ver. 1.33 run on an 09 XF?

Thanks

Tom
