Default Transmission/shifting issue in 1st gear

Hello, I have a 2009 jaguar XF. It has 81,000 miles and I haven't had it for a year yet. When I floored it today, I noticed the shifting is messed up. This happens if I'm in Drive, Sport Mode, or Manual Mode. It will accelerate as normal, then suddenly it stops, the RPMs shoot way down, a light flickers on, then it suddenly shoots back up and shifts as normal.

So, what kind of problem am I looking at? Transmission? Something else? Serious, or not so serious?

Any help is appreciated!

I made a video, here's the link:

Nice crime fighting gloves.

Hard to tell what you are doing with the accelerator there, but it looks more like an engine management issue to me. You need to get the codes from the "flickering light" to know what's going on.

Agreed I don't necessarily think that's a trans issue. Engine could be cutting power, injector not firing, ignition misfire, etc. that could all make you think it's a trans issue. As noted above what light turned on? If it was a check engine light run the codes with a OBD scanner.

Tach definitely didn't look normal assuming you kept your foot to the floor. I looked hard and did not see the DSC light or any other light.

The light only flickered the once. And yes, I kept my foot the floor the whole time. It doesn't act like this at moderate/slow acceleration.

Oh well I'm taking it to a Jag dealer to find out. I was warned about Jags being expensive to fix, so I'm a little terrified about it. Especially engine.

What light was flickering? If you were trying to spin the tires the traction light would flicker which is normal.

Jags are not expensive, the dealer is expensive. If you are out of warranty, I wouldn't go near them. Ask you local Jag club about a good independent that has the knowledge and tools to fix the XF. Usually they are staffed by ex-techs from the dealer that got sick and tired of the corrupt bonus schemes at the dealer.

Well, the main thing is what kind of repair and I'm looking at here? Something fairly simple and not too bad, or some crazy problem that's going to be $1000+?

Seriously? How can anyone tell you how long a piece of string is? I didn't see a light and I don't see a check-engine light that would give you a code. Take it to the dealer for a diagnostic and report back with their thoughts.

Looks like it shifted at about 5K, not normal. With foot to the floor it should shift at red line, right? Maybe as simple as a Tranny software flash.

Or it could be low on trans fluid. Best check that first / change fluid.

Could it be a battery issue?

Well, the problem is fixed. And I did nothing, it just doesn't do it anymore. So I have no idea if I have a problem or not, or if it'll do it again.

The car is a 2009 with 82,000 miles. Is my car getting to the age where I might have to start worrying about mechanical issues? Is it maybe a good idea to look into a newer model?

If you want a newer model, you'll loose what you love about your 09. I've threatened to trade several times but I really HATE the new engines. I don't want an R or an S but any other engine feels soooo un JAGUAR! It's hard to go from the amazing V8 to a 6 or 4!! Oh, and not even really save on fuel! I mean if there were substantial fuel savings with the lesser engine, maybe.
