Rear Window Brake Light FAQ
Do anyone know how the rear window brake light attaches to the window? I have one side that has come loose and I can't figure out how to reattach or even get the other side off. It feels really flimsy and I think it will brake completely if I put too much pressure. Are there some kind of brackets that glue to the window and then the light attaches to that?
Any help will be appreciated.
Thanks,
Jon

There are two "brackets" that glue to the window- the light slides upward when you pull it out and is locked in place by little tabs. You have to remove the third light cover first and it is pretty brittle..... there are two small places to press underneath to release the cover- of you feel under you will find them-
Cheers!

Thanks so much...I assumed as much, but it seems so fragile I wanted to confirm first. Hopefully I can just buy the bracket without having the replace the whole thing...
Thanks again for the quick reply.

Hi
Here is an extract from Jaguar Shop Repair Manual that covers removal & reinstall of the high mount brake light:
2001 XJ8 High Mount Brake light R&I.pdf
There also another thread on the forum that deals with the high mount brake light, but I not sure their brake light unit is the same as yours (I think yours has a lamp harness connector):

Here is the Jaguar Factory repair procedure.
I had some adhesive I kept in the beer fridge in the garage but after several years it became unusable. It was expensive but it worked!!

Wow...great help guys...one last question...is it worth doing this before I fix that sub? Going to tackle that project in a couple of weeks. Will getting the shelf out be any easier with the whole light removed or does the shelf just slide forward? The light has been like this since I've owned the car so a few more weeks probably wouldn't bother me...
Thanks again,
Jon

Hi
Look at this thread about how to replace subwoofer speaker:
https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/j...-issues-55556/
Go down to post# 6 - There is a PDF file extract from the Jaguar Shop Repair manual on replacing the speakers. It has the instructions and illustrations on how to replace all of the speakers includes removal of rear seat and rear parcel shelf.
There is also another thread that recommends available subwoofer speaker replacements:
https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/j...ar-deck-34735/
Go down to post# 10 - read the post numbers 10 and the others earlier dated ones in the thread.

Figures mine wouldn't have the plug/disconnect so I could take it out to repair or to silence it rattling while a new one arrives lol.
Not about to get poking around back there looking to remove the rear shelf & end up breaking more unicorn nails lol.

My rear window brake light has no metal brackets to mount the light module. Ever seen one just loose? are they 2 separate pieces, or are they connected somehow? Photos don't show the glass and mount, just the carrier, etc. BTW, my 2001 VDP lacked a plug-in, wires come up from below, and soldered to the 2 long voltage conductors. I had to cut the wires and add crimp connectors.
