Default Electrics Again

So, my SuperSport is back at the dealer. Working a dream on Saturday. Crackly sound from the hifi on Sunday, and wouldn't change audio source or connect to the telephone. Monday evening the car was as dead as a dodo.

I tried to restart it myself, got in, opened the bonnet and connected jump leads to the right places, but for some reason (likely impatience) couldn't open the boot. So I worked from home today and called Jaguar Assistance. A very helpful chap came out and got the car going. Battery seems fine, alternator seems fine. So it's off to get looked at, because something must be draining the battery. I've an XF Sportbrake as a loaner in the meantime.

A bit of an up-and-down few days for my XJ. I drove 6 AMG Mercs at the weekend, and although they were great, I wouldn't swap my car for any of them.

You said that something must be draining the battery but, you also said that the battery was found to be fine? Wondering what the mechanic had to do to get it started? Either way, I do hope that they find a code to identify the problem. I hate issues that are intermittent as they are difficult to fix if the mechanics can not reproduce it at will.

I feel exactly the same way regarding potentially swapping my XJL for anything else on the market; I simply can not think of anything I would want. My XJL is also at the dealer this week, still trying to track down that ride vibration. Every time I change wheels, tires it feels better but, after some driving the vibration is still there. This is the 4th time the car is back with the same issue. At this point I need to consider returning it to Jaguar, except I truly love the car and there is nothing else I want instead.

This time I got an 2.0 XF loaner. I figured that ride issues must be following me as the XF rode terribly rough, as if the wheels were made of solid rubber. A quick stop and check confirmed that the dealer handed me the loaner with tire pressures between 45-48 psi. 32 is normal and after dropping it back to that value all is fine with the ride. However, I must say, the 2.0 engine is not up to Jaguar standards, IMO. I would never purchase one with this engine. Lots of turbo lag, 4-banger shakes and sounds....nah...Jaguar should not have gone there!

Good luck with your car,

Albert

It's my suspicion that there's something shorting somewhere, which was leading to the odd behaviour of the infotainment system. But I did around 40 miles in the car on Sunday, then it had so little power on Monday evening that it wouldn't even unlock itself.

When the Jaguar tech attended to it, he jumped it off his Discovery, and the battery started charging, building volts and amps. So he said that the battery seemed fine. It wasn't showing a "low battery" warning, and hasn't done since I had the battery swapped around this time last year.

I don't really know, that's why I've left the car with the dealer!

Hopefully you'll get your ride issues sorted. I have a perennial problem of my cars coming back from maintenance with too little air in the tyres. The XJ is hugely sensitive to it. I usually bring the pressure up from around 32psi to around 36 when it comes back from the dealer. Yes, it becomes more jiggly, but it sharpens the handling no end.

Had a problem with my A6 years ago, similarly the battery was discharging and turned out to be the infotainment system was not going to "sleep" properly iirc...

It was a real PITA for quite some time until it was tracked down.

Hope you have better results and a quick easy fix, car back where it belongs ASAP

Hi,Please post any resolution to the ride/chassis vibration.I was told by my service manager you should expect some road feeling even on smooth surfaces. This existing problem is for 2013 XJSC 3.0,they already repaced four Pirellis/balancing.

Thank Jim

I had two front Pirelli's changed mentioned in a previous post with Jim.

The steering wheel would shake left and right. However since the Supersport has 20" wheels instead of 19" it doesn't seem like it's the tires. I've driven it on fresh interstate asphalt since then and it rides like its on rails. It's not a smooth as my 2004 XJ VDP when you feel nothing. Must be suspension or alignment.

Yeah, that's what the service manager said when he handed my car back. I'll have to play a watching brief with it now until it proves itself again. But it's back, and they gave it a right good clean!

XF Sportbrake was a nice car too, although a bit more traditional-feeling than the XJ. And wow, the seat heaters on the XF are like thermonuclear devices!

Hmm I was hoping it may be something else altogether......this problem, albeit on my A6 lasted for a while and was a nightmare to track down and get resolved.

Hopefully you have better luck

Don't buy into the Service Manager's nonsense! While you CAN expect some "road feeling" from any car as you go over road surface imperfections you SHOULD NOT feel tremors, vibrations, pattering etc. on perfectly smooth surfaces. Something IS wrong here and Jaguar either needs to fess up to it and fix it or buy the car back. That is my position, just a few hours before picking up my car from the dealer for the 4th attempt to fix this issue. Will let you know of the latest results under the specific road vibration thread.

I've just posted this in reply to an other post about the vibration:

2013 Jaguar XJ Pros and Cons: Michael's Review

"The classic Jaguar XJ was renowned for its ride quality. The current car doesn't measure up. While the XJ glides down the highway, at lower speeds it shimmies and jiggles. All but the smallest bumps send tremors through the body structure."
