Sun Shade Not Closing....2011MY
My sunroof is working fine, but the shade won't close. The motor to close it runs, as I hear it. I haven't taken a good look at it yet, but I'm assuming the bracket is broken that connects the shade to the motor/track. Is this a common issue?
Is it making a awful racket or does the system sound like it always does?
It sounds like it should. There's a roller shaft that accuates but nothing is attached to it. The shade on the front end isn't attached to anything either. I'm assuming these two items are supposed to be attached somehow.
There's a drive shaft that connects the drive motor (left side) to the guide on the right side...allowing the shade to move back and forth evenly. The same principle applies for the glass panel blind as well. The questions is what caused the guide shoes to become detached from the drive spindles on each side of the roof opening shade. It could be the guide shoes are worn, or the plastic locating pin that these guide shoes clip on to have broken or worn, or both. Or little hands have reached up and thought this looks fun to play with! To really fix this involves dropping the headlining and replacing the left hand drive motor and the guide shoes on each side. I've just done this (have a look at my previous posts on this forum). If you go down this path, then replace the glass panel shade guide shoes as well. Might as well do it once!
The service manual covers the headlining removal process pretty well. Caveats are:
Do it in a garage.
Remove the headlining slowly, checking that all cables have been disconnected as you drop it down.
The middle and aft section of the headlining has to move forward about a inch to move it off the plastic locating pins. These can be brittle and break so know the whereabouts of a good auto parts store in case you need more.
Once the headlining is dropped, support it by tilting the front seats as high and vertical as you can to give you room to move.
Google search the blind rewind procedure because when I removed mine, the spring tension released. It's actually easier to do this, rewind the tension back on and then use a 1mm hardened drill bit to hold the tension when refitting, rather than stuff about with the headlining in the way and trying to find the locating hole to insert the pin in to.
The C pillar trim can be left in...just need to be careful fitting the headlining back in.
What baffled me for some time was how to fit the front of the blinds back on to the new guide shoes. In the end I took the sunroof panel off and figured it out quickly (once again search my post and video). You don't have this luxury with the fixed glass panel but with patience you'll do it, after doing the sunroof one first.
Keep your hands clean when refitting the headlining and blinds. Don't want to have to deal with grease removal on suede after all.
A little silicone paste lubrication on the runners won't hurt either.

If changing the drive motor, make sure it comes with the long drive spindles that connects to the sliding blocks.
Hope this is of help to you!
